The dictionary says that duty is the moral or legal obligation a person has to people in his life. In order to fulfill one’s duty it is often necessary to put aside or delay one’s personal goals or desires. This creates a kind of tension within a person. In this essay I will begin by discussing some of the areas in my life where I experience this tension and then I will look at the character of Macbeth in William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. He starts out as a dutiful subject of King Duncan but after his encounter with the witches, there is a shift from pursuing his duty to pursuing his desire for power.
At the present time my duty is to my family, my education and my work. I have responsibilities at home that include things like letting others know where I am, and when I’ll be home, as well as chores like shoveling snow and doing laundry. I have a duty to go to school, study and do homework. I have a duty to sports teams to be at practices, to train hard and to be a team player. I have a duty to be at work on time and do my job well. There are always choices to make between doing what needs to be done and what I might rather do at any given time. For example I might rather hang out with my friends than do my homework. If I am responsible, I will make sure I do my homework and this may mean I don’t spend time with friends at that time. I also see a tension between doing what I am passionate about and what I know will help me meet my goals in the long term. I love to ski. On a great snow day, my favourite thing to do would be to head for the mountains. This would be following my desires. However, if I have school and work that day I choose to be responsible rather than following my passion to go skiing. I make choices based on what is right, what is best for others and me and long term goals.
In Macbeth, the main character Macbeth starts out as a person who seems to be very loyal to King Duncan. He is pictured as a brave military
