Art History 5 I will be writing about the painting called The Crowning of Mirtillo, by Ferdinand Bol. This painting is made in the year 1650 and is made of oil on canvas. The painting is a European painting and is from the country of Holland. The artist Ferdinand Bol grew up in Dordrecht. He learned to paint in Utrecht under the artist Abraham Bloemaert. Later, Bol worked for a period at the studio of Rembrandts in Amsterdam, before setting up as an independent artist in 1642. Bol mainly produced portraits and history paintings. At first his work was similar to Rembrandt's, but after 1650 he developed a more colorful and elegant style. Bol received numerous commissions, including for the Amsterdam town hall and the Admiralty. After 1669 and his second marriage to Anna van Arckel, Bol, now a wealthy man, hardly painted anymore. His self portrait of the late 1660s is one of his last works. I believe this work of art is from the Baroque period.
This painting is a scene from an Italian play by Battista Guarini called, The Faithful Shepherd. The background story of this painting tells of the central figure, Amaryllis, who is betrothed to the god, Achilles, having engaged in a kissing game. After being blindfolded she evaluates the kisses given by each of the nymphs in her attendance. Mirtillo, who had been spying on the group, was in love with Amaryllis and wished to sabotage her marriage. He disguises himself as one of the nymphs, kisses Amaryllis and becomes the winner of the contest.
The style of this painting is a baroque style because it has Chiaroscuro, the painting has dramatic light and dark. It also has humanism because the faces of the figures seem normal like everyday people. The figures aren’t exaggerated like other painting, they are like everyday people. The use of genera, which was famous in the baroque, is used in this painting. The use of genera is shown because of the dog used in the painting. The figures are shown in
