The film is metafilm which means that its characters know they’re in a film, though
Greg seems to be the only one knowing.
The main characters of the film are Greg, Earl and the dying girl (Rachel). Greg avoids finding friends and being part of a group. Greg’s “co-worker” is Earl, together they create secret parody films of famous film titles. One day his parents tell him that a girl named Rachel has cancer and begs him to visit her. He eventually succumbs to this and begins to visit her on a regular basis. Later he begins working on a film with Earl for Rachel.
The Conflict of the Film I think Greg is in conflict with himself; throughout the film, he begins caring more and more about Rachel even though he won’t admit it to himself. This is not just a problem with Rachel, but with everyone. He won’t call Earl a friend and rejects to be part of a group. I think the problem is his insecurity in himself. He is too afraid of being judged and criticized to be part of a group. Instead, he just tries to be on friendly terms with everyone and to get through high school without being part of a particular group. According to him, he would be able this get through this way without being bullied and having any sort of suffering during his high school years. …show more content…
