Media changing society
The media has a huge impact on the values and ideas of our culture. Most people are influenced by what they see on television or on their computers. Social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace are becoming more and more popular each day. What started out as a simple way to communicate with your friends turned into a worldwide phenomenon. Even some adults have gotten hooked onto this new addiction known as social media. However, a lot of people feel that this has become a serious issue with our society and our future as a country. Facebook is the most influential website on the internet today. It affects most teenagers either negatively or positively. Some shy teenagers begin to break out of their shells and start to become more social; however some teenagers start to build a shell to hide in. “For Evan, the No. 1 reason is it’s helping him come out of his shell and develop social skills that he wasn’t learning because he’s so shy. I couldn’t just push him out of the house and say ‘Find someone." (Saxena). This is one example of how social media is benefiting our society. Shy kids and even adults are starting to become more social and out-going. One thing that I found interesting about this article is that the author went so in depth as to conduct a survey about the issue. She asked about 300 people their opinion on the topic and found that 74% of the voters said that social media is hurting our society. A lot of people believe that face-to-face interaction is becoming a lost practice among humans. I think that face-to-face interaction is better than talking to someone through a computer or a cell phone. My boyfriend and I are a good example. We barely text throughout the day, but we do not stop talking whenever we are together. I feel that it is much easier to communicate and really understand how the person feels when I talk them in person. On the other hand, I do agree with the idea that social media is hurting our society as a whole. Many

Instead of using social media to communicate and connect positively, our society has used it to create countless issues and distractions that only deter and detract from developing our social…

If you observe people in today society many people are influenced by the extreme grasp of social media. “Marketing, Media, and the First Amendment: What’s Best for Children?” written by Susan Linn, talks about how advertising plays an important part of directly advertising to children. William Deresiewicz the author of “Faux Friendship”, writes about how friendships have been becoming more centralized through social media instead of being centralized through person. In an age where information and interactions are just a few clicks away, it has become easy to blame social media sites for problems in society. In other words, these students are finding it harder to socialize with other because they have gotten used to communicating through text. In the article “ Facebook Makes Us Sadder And Less Satisfied, Study Finds” by Elise Hu, John Jonides a neuroscientist, suspects, “ When you’re on a site like Facebook, you get lots of posts about what people are doing. That sets up social comparison — you maybe feel your life is not as full and rich as those people you see on Facebook.” Meaning that as the more people use social media they start to compare their life with others, which could affect them in a negative way like becoming less sociable because they have became…

Sherry Turkle is correct when saying social media is corroding the real community. Social media is broadening our connections, but making them shallower. Social media gives people a false sense of belonging and connection. As Sherry Turkle pointed out, technology “offers us three gratifying fantasies. One, that we can put our attention wherever we want it to be; two, that we will always be heard; and three, that we will never have to be alone. And that third idea, that we will never have to be alone, is central to changing our psyches. Because the moment that people are alone, even for a few seconds, they become anxious, they panic, they fidget, they reach for a device”. Rather than talking to the people around us, we are diving into our devices…
