What surprised you most about Deaf culture so far?
Why do you think there are myths (misunderstandings) about Deaf culture?
What do you think you should do to continue finding out myths and truths about Deaf culture?
What surprised me most about Deaf culture was the belief of how deafness isn't something that
needs to be fixed. Being a person of hearing, I relay on my hearing for many things such as: school,
getting up in the morning, cooking, walking across the street, etc; that I can't quite understand a life
without my hearing. No, I can't at all grasp the thought of being deaf.
My next surprise about Deaf culture was when deaf people are signing, if there's no way of
getting around them, they'd prefer you to go through than wait for them to finish. In my eyes that
seems more rude, especially since the language is visual. If it were me I'd think it would be nice if they
wait or maybe tap my shoulder and ask to go through, that way I wouldn't miss anything the other
person was saying. Would that be rude though? Next it is extremely rude to interrupt a signing person. That person has the floor and is given
complete eye contact until a visual indicator is used saying s/he is finished. No matter if someone else
needs to talk to you. The first person talking to you has to finish then you may talk to the next person.
Myths about anything come about because people don't take the time to research something
they don't understand. It's the exact reason for the myths about deaf people. Others are too lazy or
don't actually care about the topic to research and find out the truth. So they make things make or end
up listening to others who have made things up.
Another reason could be a miscommunication between people about said topic. Neither one
explained incorrectly or the other wasn't watching/listening. Like when someone daydreams during
class and misses
