The field of dietetics is so diverse that it is important for people with an interest in a specific area of practice to be able to communicate with mentors, or people working in the specific area of practice, for more information. For people who are interested in Dietetics, the experiences that one can expect while working in a particular area of practice is important and best attained through mentoring, shadowing or interviewing someone who has been working in the area of practice. Through this experience I learned the value of mentoring and precepting throughout ones professional life. The experiences and other information that I learned through mentoring and interviewing helped to expand my thoughts about what I may want to do and how I may want to do things in the future. Mentoring and precepting also allows students majoring in dietetics like me to get advice to avoid mistakes in the future by learning from mentors. It also allows us to learn about different options that are available, but not commonly known, to achieve things within the field. Without mentoring and precepting it would be hard for the less commonly known areas of practice within the practice to develop and expand because not many people entering the field of dietetics will know about it.
