Your “Fantastic Voyage!” is continuing. You are still a video reporter piloting a mini-sub that has been put through a miniaturization process making you and the sub only 8 microns long. This time, you have been swallowed by a 55 year old man eating a hamburger, french fries and a root beer.…
Accurate evaluation of bacterial colonization as a predictive index for alfalfa sprouts has relied on a quantitative culture technique that provides exact colony counts per gram of tissue by culture of five serial dilutions of the alfalfa water. In this study 1 package of alfalfa sprouts were cultured by a semi-quantitative technique that enumerated the number of gram-negative enteric organism in 1 ml of alfalfa water. Exact colony counts from the experiment were available only from cultures 10-2 and 10-3 CFUs. Other colony counts were reported as less than 10-3 or greater than 10-1 CFUs. Therefore, this quantitative and semi-quantitative culture technique provides us with accurate information, shows us how to calculate the number of colony forming units, and helps us gain a better understanding of the importance of viable plate counts.…

Jonathan Kozol’s book, Amazing Grace, is based on the lives of the people living in the poorest congressional district of the United States, the South Bronx. In the book, Kozol describes the experiences he had while visiting Mott Haven, a poor neighborhood in the South Bronx that is two thirds Hispanic, and one third black. In his report, Kozol portrays a world where babies are born frequently to drug abusive mothers infected with AIDS, where children are murdered on the streets, where there are scarce job opportunities or opportunities in general, and where the majority of men are either on crack or in prison. In uncovering these depressing realities for the people of Mott Haven, Kozol…

Because MEPD, a self-contained division of SMA, achieved a profitable operating margin of 6.5% in 1990, is seems clear that they have survived an industry shakeout in the micro-electronic and telecommunications market. However, this is short of their targeted goal of 25-30%, which they achieved just five years earlier (see Appendix 1). This mediocre performance is the result not only of an industry downturn but also profound organizational and structural problems at MEPD.…

Immunoglobulin’s or antibodies are substances produced by the body’s immune system in response to bacteria, viruses, or other foreign substances, such as fungus, allergens or cancer cells. Antibodies attach to the foreign substances, causing them to be destroyed by other immune system cells. Secretory Immunoglobulin A (SIgA) is a subclass of Immunoglobulin A (IgA), an antibody that plays a critical role in mucosal immunity. SIgA is the main immunoglobulin found in mucous secretions from the tear glands, salivary glands, mammary glands, the respiratory system, the genito-urinary tract, and the gastrointestinal tract. SIgA plays a key role in protecting vulnerable areas such as the oral cavity, lungs, and gut from invading pathogens.…

This report presents a study on the microstructure of 8 material samples using the proper optical microscopy techniques. Emphasis is given in sample preparation, the right use of transmitting and reflecting optical microscopy methods, and a detailed analysis of the distinct microstructure of metal, ceramic, and polymer materials. For metals and ceramics, preparation procedures include grinding, polishing, and surface treatment (etching) which may vary in different samples. Generally, for opaque materials as such, the samples are viewed in reflecting mode. In the case of polymers, samples are sliced into very thin layers for viewing in transmitting mode, due to their translucent properties to light. This technique utilizes principles in the polarization of light to obtain distinct elements of the microstructure. The microstructure of metals and ceramic binary alloys can be accurately interpreted using the information provided in their respective phase diagrams (eutectic and binary), which explains the outcome of the microstructure based on previous heat treatment and alloy composition. It has also been observed that alloys with similar composition, but prepared under dissimilar heat treatment conditions possess stark differences in grain structure and phases present. As for polymers, differences in microstructure can be attributed to their crystalline and non-crystalline properties.…

Nanotechnology, the science of the extremely tiny as commonly known (one nanometer is one-billionth of metre), is an important emerging industry which is thought to reach a market of one trillion US dollars by 2015. It involves the understanding and control of atoms and molecules to create new materials with a variety of useful functions. It is the understanding and control of matter at the sphere of 1 to 100 nanometers (a sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick). Nanotechnology is a technology executed on the scale of less than 100 nanometers, the goal of which is to control individual atoms and molecules, especially to create microscopic devices and other microscopic things (example: Computer chips). It is a natural result of scientific development, our ability to understand and manipulate matter at smaller and smaller levels. Just as computers have gone from bulky, room filling machines to tiny laptops and palmtops. Nanomaterials are now used in a variety of products, including sporting goods, cosmetics and electronics. The fact that unusual physical, chemical, and biological properties can emerge in materials at the nanoscale makes them particularly appealing for medicine. Scientists hope nanoparticles will be able to improve the effect of drugs and gene therapy by carrying them to the right place in the body and by targeting specific tissues, regulating the release of drugs and reducing damage to healthy tissues. They also envision the possibility of implantable nano devices that would detect disease, treat it and report to the doctor automatically from inside the body. Let us look at the uses of nanotechnology more closely.…
