Middle School Counselor Roles
The purpose of this research is to analyze the role of middle school counselors and determine whether the job functions and roles are changing to represent the change in societal youth. The purpose of conducting a study of this topic is to determine if middle school counselors’ roles and job functions should be redesigned to better reflect the needs of students today. The article published by the “American Secondary Education Vol. 40, 2012” conducted a study that provides me with information on roles and functions of middle school counselors from the view points of principles. This is important to my research because the principles in this study categorized the duties of counselors into four different categories which could be used to determine if the role directly fits the needs of students. By analyzing the job functions and roles of the counselor and comparing them to the needs of societal youth it can be determined whether or not counselors are helping students and addressing thier needs. If research proves the opposite, it is apparent that the role of the middle school counselor should be redesigned. Data for research will be drawn from a population of middle school counselors in Texas public schools, categorized as “Title 1”. I would use systematic sampling to select 20

During this study, I will be researching to answer the question: Are students receiving services they need from school counseling based on the roles and functions of the school counselor.
A survey will be conducted to determine the duties of a middle school counselor at a Title 1 school in Tx. Another questionaire will be given to analyze reasons for visits to the counselors office by students and lastly, an inquiry will be made to determine the amount of time spent on certain categories to review the counselors priorities. The objective is to verify that productive time is being on duties designed to help and serve the students in order to determine if a redesign is
