This school Psychologist, Dr. Amato, described his role in the school and community and I loved the sort of relationship he discussed having with the students, parents, and town members. Though his schedule is busy, his work has the ability to promote positive change within the school and provides him with enough challenges to grow as an individual. As a graduate student, I hope to gain the skills that would allow me to effectively detect various learning and mental health difficulties in students so that they can receive the necessary attention they deserve. With cultural diversity being an area of interest for me, I would love to further research the impact which this diversity creates between students, their families and the school system. Furthermore, I’m interested in how methods currently used in therapies, such as mindfulness training, can be applied within the school environment in unique…

The definition of mindfulness that is going to be used for this paper is that “mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment. Mindfulness also involves acceptance, meaning that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them—without believing, for instance, that there’s a “right” or “wrong” way to think or feel in a given moment. When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we’re sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future. (Greater Good Foundation, 2013) “Although mindfulness originated as a Buddhist meditation practice (Kabat Zinn, 2003 p 145), its secular adaptations have recently received a great deal of interest in Western empirical phycology…

They would come up with acronyms to help us remember them and make us do project involving them. In high school they were called the ESLERS, what it stood for escapes me now. I guess the school thought it was a good idea to make sure that every classroom had these learning goals posted on the wall. I thought that was always a little silly, but I can't think of a better way of using them. It never really helped me personally but I could see how it could help others.…
