The early 1950’s was a time of enormous importance because of the Civil Rights Movement which emphasized equal rights for blacks and whites. According to the book Approaching Literature, this time period became very familiar to August Wilson, the author of the play Fences. Wilson, an African American man, was raised by his mother and his ex-convict father. For a short period of time, before moving back to his old neighborhood, Wilson lived in a primarily white neighborhood where he experienced the feeling of being on the “outside.” When he was in the ninth grade he had a teacher that believed there was no way he could have written an intelligent, twenty page research paper on Napoleon Bonaparte, so she accused him of plagiarism. This incident pushed Wilson to drop out of high school and teach himself. From that point on, he began educating himself by reading through the section of black authors in the local library. Wilson had strong views and opinions about the rights of African Americans. So much so, that he wrote quite a few plays concerning this major part of history. (1024) In Wilson’s play, Fences, how does he use psychological and physical boundaries to show the emotional separations between his characters?…
The mask is one of the most important parts to fencing gear, as it offers a barrier of protection against the face and protects the head. When looking to buy a fencing mask, it can be very confusing to figure out which kind is best for you, and with all the different kinds of masks available for different purposes and skill levels, it can seem like there’s a fine line between convenience and complexity. There isn’t really a lot of information on the different kinds of masks and what they are used for, and with different types of fencing jargon thrown in the mix, it can be quite overwhelming. But with the right knowledge, it can become a piece of cake to find the perfect mask.…
When the season began, we did not have a coach to lead us, so we practiced apace with the Varsity squad. A few weeks into the season, the Varsity coach found us a mentor that would lead us. As a few more weeks went by, our coach started picking up on more activities, which was too much for her to handle so she left, and we were once again without a coach. The team began to fall apart and it became very stressful for all of us. After the first three months of cheering, we had lost 8 girls on the team. Throughout those three months, my…
Troy Maxson was a man who chose to live on his past; do you think he should have let the past go? Do you think it would’ve made a better future for his family?…
A wise British novelist once wrote, “Nobody but he who has felt it, can receive what a plaguing thing it is to have a man’s mind torn asunder by two projects of equal strength, both obstinately pulling in a contrary direction at the same time.” In the drama Fences, August Wilson uses stylistic devices to characterize how the main character, Troy Maxson, is pulled in conflicting directions by compelling desires, ambitions, obligations and influences.…
From the beginning, Elie Wiesel's work details the threshold of his adult awareness of Judaism, its history, and its significance to the devout. His emotional response to stories of past persecution contributes to his faith, which he values as a belief system rich with tradition and unique in its philosophy. A divisive issue between young Elie and Chlomo is the study of supernatural lore, a subset of Judaic wisdom that lies outside the realm of Chlomo's pragmatism. To Chlomo, the good Jew attends services, prays, rears a family according to biblical dictates, celebrates religious festivals, and reaches out to the needy, whatever their faith.…
The article “Don’t Mourn Brown V. Board of Education” by Juan Williams discusses that it is now time for something greater in effect than what the Brown V. Board of Education can offer us today. Brown V. Board had a huge part in civil rights movement and got Americans to think about inequality in society and in education. Assimilating students does not insure that students that are black or Hispanics will not drop out high school nor does it guarantee the narrowing of performance levels. In fact schools have become more segregated while the nation has become more diverse. Schools continued to fail even with Brown V. Board of Education was enforced. The parents began to become dissatisfied with their children being pulled out of neighborhood schools and instead being bussed to different schools further away. The Supreme Court realized that using school children to address segregation in school was not going to fix segregation in society. Busing students began to be replaced with magnet school and charter schools and eventually the Supreme Court began to believe that the fourteenth amendment was better served by treating children as individuals rather than as tools to enforce segregation.…
‘The Fence’ is an interesting subject and effects just about everyone in both the United States and Mexico, not just the residents that live on the border because the immigrants do not stay just on the border. After they cross they search for homes and work all over the United States. Megan asks some very good questions. Does the fence serve its purpose? Will it stop illegal immigrants from entering the United States? What about Terrorists? And Drugs?…

Something as old as bullfighting might seem out of style but it is quite a prominent sport. The show of bullfighting has been around for a long time and was a popular spectacle in ancient Rome. It was fully developed in the Iberian Peninsula. The North African Moors changed this sport from a “formless spectacle practised by the conquered Visigoths to a ritualistic occasion observed in connection with feast days on which the conquering Moors, mounted on highly trained horses, confronted and killed the bulls.”(Spainsh Fiestas) Around 711A.D. the first bullfight took place in celebration for the crowning of King Alfonse VIII. King Felipe V liked the sport but he banned it from the aristocracy because he thought it set a bad example for the public. Once it was banned the commoners accepted the ‘sport’ as something they did and started playing it around 1724. They couldn't afford horses so they did it by dodging the bulls and doing it unarmed. They dodged and taunted the bulls. They eventually ended up placing small spears into them which is where we get banderillas in the bullfights todays. It has been said that bullfighting is literally dancing with death. If they make one wrong move the fighter will get gored which is why it is so important for the…
Watched the news lately? Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump keeps mentioning how he is planning to force Mexico into dishing out billions of dollars to build a new and impregnable border wall. Public opinion seems to sway both ways on Trump's outrageous ideals regarding immigration reform, however here in south Texas; we observed a border wall built nearly seven years ago. Let us take an in depth look at the border wall and how it has impacted the local communities, land owners, and the overall effectiveness of the wall in deterring individuals from entering the United States illegally.…
Standardized testing, every student should be familiar with it, but is it nonsense? Does it actually help schools and their students advance in academic competence, or does it hinder their ability by adding more anxiety and stress to students? Jacequeline Howard, a twenty year old student helps us disclose on these examinations by giving us a student’s perspective on how standardized testing is not only changing the way government looks at funding, but also discouraging students and changing the way people look at students. Through Howards ethos, pathos, logos, and style in her essay, we can really see her passion for other students and her reason to promote a change.…

Soaking in the warmth of the sun, the smell of freshly mowed grass, the serene rhythm of my cleats against the track, I knew I was back to my home away from home. The Lacrosse field has always been my oasis for many reasons; ones that my parents do not understand, but other collegial athletes or sports enthusiasts would. It is where I get to release my stress through exercise, and where I get to play the sport I love with the people I love. While going through my mental checklist of mouth guard, water, running shoes, sunscreen, and lastly my lacrosse stick, I come to the conclusion that I am full prepared and ready to “lax.” It is funny how as I walk up to the bench I see other freshman who resembled me on my first day. Confused, intimidated, and not knowing where to go, and what to think, I was not too long ago in the very same position. Thinking back that a year ago, it was at my first day of lacrosse practice, and I had no idea what was to happen on a division one-club team in college. Unlike last year, I now come to practice being prepared, and actually being the one leading practice with my friends and fellow teammates.…
Everything was so cool at first because I didn't realize anything that was happening because my excitement got the best of me. Then I stopped getting excited to go to practices. The old Coach did not even pay any attention to the new players. He did not try to teach them the game of soccer or even how to play. It just seemed he only payed all his attention to his returning players. Which, absolutely did not make any sense to me at all. Mainly, because since the fact that they already knew how to play. They had been playing since they were really young children. I felt like It would just make a lot more sense to work with the new players. So they can know how to play and understand the actually game of soccer more. But, since he did not see it that way, he did not do that at all. So when he did put me in the last 5 minutes of what it seemed to be every blue moon, that's not exact. But, he would get upset and pull me right back out of the game because I was not doing anything right. This is because he did not teach me the right thing to do. It even happened at practices, there was very many days when he just…
