My First Journal Entry
Finial Exam

As I began my finial assignment in English Composition, I looked at my first journal entry and instantly I could see many mistakes I had made. Mostly my significant lack of transitions, I just have short bland sentences/statements simply separated by commas. For example, Wilbanks, M. (2017). Journal entry one: “Now in college courses I sometimes have issues still with placing everything correctly on my paper, I really enjoy learning to write, doing the research is my favorite part of the course, seems to keep my attention to be able to research on line, unlike when all I had was books”. Looking at this I see I have used commas way too many times in one sentence, which makes my sentence turn into one paragraph. There is an enormous

I put all my effort into rereading my papers over and over and while they will sound completely correct to my ear, they are far from correct to my readers, (instructors). Not only can I not place my punctuations correctly, I also have a huge issue with grammar I have a bad habit of using the wrong homonym, or homophones. I know the difference between them, but I seem to use them incorrectly still and don’t catch these mistakes when I proof read. Whereas for all the other parts of the writing process, such as brainstorming to discover a good topic and begin my draft, or the revising of my content, organization, and style of writing; to editing which is the area I can identify and address specific problem areas. Not only have I learned how to do each of these steps in the writing process I know how to separate editing from revising, as for revising is based on organization and my style of writing… editing emphases more on my grammar, punctuation, formatting, and spelling. I had never been proficient at using both methods when writing the only one I was aware of was editing, which consisted only of grammar and punctuation. So, once I started college and choose criminal justice, I was petrified, wondering why I would have to take a writing class, but with further lessons I have realized I really was lacking a lot of the abilities I needed to become a better writer or to even understand writing correctly. After taking this course I can now see the most improvement in my revising of my paper, I can now know how to be better organized with my assignment as to what I have been informed my my professor. Making sure my paper is in good condition when it comes to my style of writing and the content I have

Joseph Harris’ essay “Revising” (2006 pg.452-69); serves as a guide in how to correctly revise any writing you have ever completed. Harris designates four points that must be taken under consideration while revising. Before getting to the core of his argument, Harris notes that revising is not the same as editing. The essay points out that students are trained too just polish and make their writing sleeker rather than making a difference or significant change to the original. From there Harris brings up his first point stating that the author must decide what exactly it is that they are trying to convey. Harris believes the problem stems from that fact that many writers focus too much on correcting mistakes without thinking of what it is they…

In a few years from now, I would really like to open up some sort of cafe, specifically a boba shop. I would like for it to be located in California, specifically Southern California so it can compete with other boba shops. The menu would be filled with a variety of milk teas, flavored teas, and lattes that can be paired with various toppings such as boba, grass jelly, egg pudding, different popping boba flavors, and an array of different fruit jellies. I would also like to serve small desserts on the side, such as macarons, mille crepe cakes, and brick toast. As for the cafe itself, I would like for it to have a cozy yet minimalistic vibe from the decor. In other terms, white…

I find great interest in the Egyptian culture. The culture goes back through time. Sayre (2013) stated, “Egypt’s continuous cultural tradition—lasting over 3,000 years—is history’s clearest example of how peace and prosperity go hand in hand with cultural stability” (p. 28).…

My name is Guy Johanson, and I am a sophomore Music Education major at the Setnor School of Music. I am originally from Liverpool, NY, just outside of Syracuse. I have been involved with Syracuse University since the time I was in middle school participating in youth ensembles playing the French Horn and the Oboe. Currently I am a member of the Syracuse University Marching Band, Tau Beta Sigma (the national band sorority), and am usually playing with many ensembles around campus. I work at Old Navy in Destiny USA during school breaks, while during the school year I work at the Cathedral Academy at Pompey as an after school music program teacher. My strongest skill that I possess, I believe, is my ability to time manage. Throughout the past year and a half, I have learned to balance 19+ credits, sorority involvement, and working two jobs during the year.…

Throughout my writing experience I have always struggled with my body paragraphs. I tend to always have a strong introduction but once I began to go into my first body paragraph I lose my train of thought. One of my main issues is that I get to wordy. Which then leaves me with fragments. Lastly, which I’m sure most people have an issue with is basic grammar errors such as, spelling and placing commas. I feel that my writing has had a small progression. Through this class I have learned more writing techniques that have helped me as a writer.…

Lacking experience in writing and reading, English is my most feared subject. It is the one and only vulnerable spot in my otherwise invincible academic armor. I hate writing and I despise reading. Other than magazines, I cannot recall reading anything since "The Crucible" which was a teacher assigned book in my sophomore high school English class. Not that I read a lot before that, I don't remember reading any books in my middle school years neither. Now, with this writing assignment since a long time, my brain feels like an old rusty engine of an 81 Porsche cranking up for the first time in years, readying to compete in the English 1A heat.

My parents and my favorite math teacher always told me that I'm a very bright individual and my accomplishments in other subjects prove that. I approached and conquered the subjects of math, science, and history like a paladin in gold, yet faced with writing, I would coward in fear. To me, writing equals to nothing more than stress and frustration. A useless hassle and senseless boredom which I thought was too stupid to waste effort on. Therefore I have shied away from this department for as long as I can remember and focused all my energy toward the areas I have strength and faith in.

The writing compartment in my brain is very restricted. I lack flexibility in the use of words and phrases. A typical sentence of mine, starts with "I", "It", "Because", "The", "But", "Therefore". It is extremely difficult for me to think of new ways to begin sentences or use sophisticated sentence patterns which I see in other people's essays. But when it comes to grammar, I am extremely proud because there are usually no corrections on the essays my teachers hand back, or maybe it's because they're too lazy to correct them.

When I'm actually writing, I write as fast as a turtle can crawl. A 2 page essay usually takes me around 6 hours to finish. My teacher once told me to use a process called brainstorming which I tried…

Over the quarter of this semester I have completed a total of three essays. Throughout my coursework I have been able to identify my strengths and weaknesses as a writer. Going through graded papers I have identified my strengths to be using sensory language well to convey a vivid picture, using proper verb tense, and organization of an overall paper. However, I frequently struggle with comma errors and using transitions to create cohesion throughout an essay.…

I can remember always correcting my family and friends as they talked. They always said “What are you an English major” I always just laughed. Then as time went on and texting came more popular using acronyms and abbreviations I fell into the trap of talking and writing like my teenager. This class has challenged me to use correct punctuation and more intelligent word choices. After writing three essays for this class I have noticed that my mistakes involve punctuation. My first essay had a few comma errors, and a run-on sentence. My second essay again comma errors. My third essay only one comma error so I sure did improve my punctuation by slowing down and reading it repeatedly until I feel that its correct. The only other mistake I made was on the literacy essay. I struggled putting my thoughts on paper and rushed the ending because the paper had already drained me by the time I reached the conclusion. I felt this was the hardest one to write. Having to read a book and write a compare or contrast essay and have it not sound like a book report was a struggle I was just writing words to fill up the paper. My grade also showed the way that I…
