I don’t recall where I felt that my formal writing experiences went wrong, but I found myself facing challenges and adapting to change no matter what type of writing style. Since I became a member of the United States Military in 2002, the military had a unique writing style in which every Soldier and Officer must be able to understand the writer’s ideas in a single reading, this included official correspondences. However, I had always had the desire to become proficient at formal writing, because I feel I lack the confidence, the basic knowledge of grammar structure, and Modern Language Association (MLA) formatting. I know for a fact that I continue to struggle with writing because I tend to get my point across and also clearly state what I really mean. I can narrow some of my flaws in writing such as not utilizing proper grammar usage, proper punctuation, struggling with a theme or thesis, keeping the language simple, etc. While in High School and a traditional college English course, I didn’t enjoy having to sit through another lecture or complete another assignment. I had a feeling of self-doubt when it came to doing the basics of writing and comprehension, which made my confidence level very low. Since I lacked a lot of confidence, which made me guess at answers to questions, skim over reading assignments, I didn’t speak up to ask questions, and I surely didn’t challenge myself when it came to writing assignments.
