My Pet Peeve Analysis
Summative Journal

Topic: My Pet Peeve….

When I had first arrived in Canada, I had heard a very common saying almost everywhere I went. This was very commonly used during school, and I had thought it was a brilliant solution to every problem. The saying “no offence” had caught my eye, because you could always make something wrong seem right. I had constantly used this expression, and always thought it had made every problem alright, but little did I know it actually made things worse. Certainly at such a young age me nor anyone else understood the clear meaning of this saying, but now I do.

The article “Label Us Angry” written by Jeremiah Torres describes the personal experience that changed his perspective on the world that surrounds him. Jeremiah and Carlos grew up together in Palo Alto, as adolescents their race went from being overlooked to recognized. This specific night they were going out to celebrate Carlos’ seventeenth birthday. Jeremiah “pulled out of the Safeway driveway as a speeding driver delivered a jolting honk.” The two cars “lined up at a spotlight” it was a young white man dressed in a polo shirt and slacks driving a BMW. The white man said, “he wasn’t honking at you, you stupid fuck!” Jeremiah gave him a middle finger while the white man pulled out a can of mace spraying them proceeding to say, “Take that you fucking lowlifes! Stupid chinks!” As their eyes burned no one stopped to help,…

Suicide. Some imagine the unsuccessful businessman slowly bringing a gun to his head. Some see Romeo and Juliet uniting themselves for eternity though death. Others remember Lifetime Television Movies about women in their twenties who overdose on over the counter pills. But there are as many different reasons for suicide as there are people. Take for example, Jeannine. At the age of 103 Jeannine decided that she had lived a full life. She stopped taking her medications and died a few days later in her sleep. Jeannine was healthy for her age and for the most part able to care of herself. Although she committed suicide, her particular case should not carry the false connotation of misery which often accompanies such deaths. Jeannine was not miserable; she merely chose to consciously and responsibly plan her death.…

The last century has seen many movements for change in Canada, yet there is still much work to be done. Our society views a certain group of people with a high regard and an authority over others; these same people fall into the group that Audre Lorde calls the ‘Mythical Norm.’ Although Canada claims to be a land of equal opportunity, the ever-present conception of the mythical norm creates a breeding ground from which oppression grows in Canadian society. The idea of this norm is what leads to the domination of white males in the Canadian economy and within the country’s justice system. This essay will explore the ways in which the mythical norm creates sexist, homophobic, and racist oppressions in society.…

Isn’t it annoying when someone is trying to go to his or her locker before and after class, but could not because couples are making out in front the lockers? It is also annoying when people are holding hands and walking really slow and students who are trying to get somewhere are unable to do so. Public Display of Affection, a.k.a PDA, has always been controvercial. In fact, many are against it and believe there should be limits on PDA. Moreover, public display of affection can be expressed in any forms. PDA can range from holding hands to hugging and to even more inappropriate actions such as full making-out session and touching innappropriate places. As a matter fact, PDA is inappropriate and should be kept out of school. But students should also have his or her freedom of expression.…

People that chew with their mouths open are people repellents. Nobody wants to be friends with the person chomping away at their meal. As I walked into the room filled with eyes shooting my direction, I noticed that I was one of two Asians in my class. During the second week of school, a chubby Hispanic girl mumbled “ugh, china” as she passed the glue during our project. The feeling of anguish in one’s stomach and cold anger that I felt when she called me that was well, hard to stomach. They say that revenge is best served cold but at the time I did not know what the word china meant but I knew that it could not have been good because all the kids were laughing at me. The lone feeling of being in the middle and the laughingstock deeply scared my memory and made me a very cold and introverted person. Because of the clear segregation between…
