My Secret Hideaway
My Secret Hideaway I have been driven up the wall many times in school and at home; I sometimes feel that I am surrounded by horrible human beings. At times like this, I thank God I had discovered my secret hideaway. My secret hideaway is actually an abandoned hut about 3km in the jungle behind my home. Whenever I have the urge to go on my therapeutic trip, I usually leave in the morning. After packing my haversack with bottles of water, some food, books and other essential items such as a machete and torchlight, I set off with a spring in my steps. I like the early morning walk through the jungle; the air is crisp and invigorating. The gloom provided by the jungle canopy is punctuated by beams of sunlight. I have often stopped and stared at the magical vision that has never felt to me in awe. By the time I reach my exalted hut, I am pumped with energy. The hut is partially covered by wild creepers that----- if one were easily spooked----- gives it eerie, haunted look. As I open the door to let the air and the sun rush in, I am careful to see what rushes out, squirrel has scampered, snake has slithered and some birds have flapped out. My heart is relatively easy. There is a mat, an old cupboard and some cooking utensils left behind the former lodger. I have kept the place clean, spartan though it may be.
I spend a lot of my time outside the hut. Many a time, I have screamed like a screamed like a banshee and howled like a demented werewolf. Every time I feel a need to release my tension and every pent-up anger then I have foolishly retained the whole week.
Not too far away from the hut, it’s a stream that has always seemed inviting on hot days. As the sun rises in the sky and the humidity of the jungle gets to me, I discard my clothes and take a cold dip. Algebra and History seem like million miles away. I clamber up a rock under a shady tree and let the drowsiness suck me away into oblivion.
I have always regarded the hut and the immediate vicinity

The mountains were stone dark, secured with trees whose hues were a blend of woodsy cocoa, knoll, key lime, and margarita green. Scattered powder-puff mists gradually fled over the sky and the sun feed like a bolt. Seeing this made me feel like I inadvertently touched base to paradise. I breath gradually, attempting to recall each snapshot of me being encompassed by woodland, sky, and mountains. We began climbing the gigantic mountain, talking, grinning and chuckling together. After like an hour we sat down for a moment on an immense uneven and dusty rock close to the waterfall. The wind that blew through the trees into our confronts now conveyed a light sprinkle from the waterfall, and a clue of peace. The sound of the wind shrieking, the waterfall smashing against the stones and the fowls singing their wonderful tunes, made me feel considerably more joyful than I was at that point. We began moving to the top once more. My legs began to hurt yet I didn't give an indication of my torment. I raised my eyes to the sky, and my sight fell on the hawk who skimmed over the wind. At that time, I craved flying as well, over the mountains and over the oceans. I strolled slower now, thinking how brilliant it would be to fly, and the greater part of the…

What is that? A hut? Is there someone there? Thoughts racing through my mind I run toward it, straight to the door. Nervous, we stop when we get to the door. What if no one is here? What if this is just a dream…our imagination? We lift our hand to knock, and rap three times. We wait for what seems to be an eternity. Just as we were turning to walk away the door opens and we turn back to see two people standing in the doorway.…

This book is about Nelly and her mother hiding from the Nazis in a friend’s house. They hid in a little window that had been closed off to keep the house warmer in the winters. They only went into the window when someone came into the house, so no one would know that they were hiding there. For around three years Nelly and her mother hid there. Nelly was constantly wondering if her father would come and join them. For these three years they passed the time by talking with each other, knitting, or for Nelly, painting watercolors.…

As a child, I was raised my whole life in the country side. My mother and I had lived for years in a lonely shack at the edge of the small village we called home. At the very edge of the village was an eerie forest, a forest that seemed to beckon unwary fools into entering it. I was always told as a child to never go near the forest, especially at night. Some people say that a bear lives there, while others say that a serial killer lives there, and some even say that a monster lives there, either way the forest is always portrayed with death. I remember various occasions in which I would wake up for reasons unknown, only to find myself outside in my backyard staring at the edge of the forest, the soft moonlight caressing my bare skin, the crisp night air followed by the refreshing scent of grass. On one occasion I thought I heard a…

One morning, we decided to go out with some of the guests from the hostel for a hike along the hills by the seashore. These hills were covered in thick blades of grass but had rock faces that were pointed out towards the water. If you looked to your left you’d see these hills go for miles; mound after mound, circular shaped huts with cone shaped roofs sitting on top. African trees as well, looking as if the wind was blowing all the branches to one side of the trunk but they stood absolutely still; frozen in time. To your right you’d see the ocean go out for as far as you can see, while standing on a cliff with an almost vertical drop. From looking at the cliffs from the sides, it showed the many trails descending down the cliffs made by mountain goats and every once and a while you could see one half way down; climbing up. Although our surroundings were incredible, the heat was as well. We went through several bottles of water through-out the hike. Our leader, an African local, lead us down one of the more climbable hills to the ocean floor where it was covered in rock. With the sun beating down on us we felt trapped because we couldn’t swim in the water, the waves were too strong we’d be thrown up against the rocks.…

    The Hiding Place

Watching the movie The Hiding Place made me realize how much better and different books are than movies. A major difference between the book and the movie was the beginning. For instance, the book started with the watch shops’ 100th Anniversary, and the movie started with the Nazis taking away the Ten Boom family’s radio. The movie skipped a lot of events such as the 100th Anniversary and introducing the family and their roles in the story. It would have been better if the movie at least showed the 100th Anniversary so that people watching could see how important, respected, and well known the Ten Boom family was in their community. In addition, the role Betsie played in the story was the same in both the book and the movie. Betsie is Corrie’s sister. She was significant to the story because her character and personality was “a light in the dark tunnel” they were passing through. Betsie held onto her strong faith in the Lord and thought only positive things about their situation. For example, Betsie said to thank God under any circumstance because He never makes mistakes and there is a reason for everything. You see, God has a plan for all of us and it may be hard to understand sometimes, but with Him it all works out for the best. Corrie and Betsie learned that even the most dreadful things such as fleas, can be a blessing from God. “You know we’ve never understood why we had so much freedom in the big room,’ she said,’well-i’ve found out.’...’because of the fleas!” p.231 in The Hiding Place. Overall, I enjoyed the book more than the movie. The reason is because the book had more details; therefore, everything made more sense and was easier to understand. It was also far more interesting than the movie. The book had a bit of romance, mystery, drama, and never bored me. On the other hand, the movie was boring, had no suspense or drama and I couldn’t fully concept what was going on. In conclusion, The Hiding Place helped me realize how truly blessed I am. This story…

In my earlier years my family took me camping to a lake. My cousins came as well, which made it even more enjoyable. When we arrived at the campsite, I was in awe. It was something out of a Disney movie. There were towering pine trees shielding us from the sun’s rays. Wild plants and bushes surrounded our campsite, but not too far away was a clearing in the bushes where we can see the lake in all its glory. People were fishing, kayaking, swimming, and playing with their dogs.…

As I entered the hidden destination, there it lay, a massive 70 foot tall waterfall. The water was rushing down the smooth side of this massive stone. Trees were hanging over the sides of the waterfall as if they were staring at their death. I was frightened to do what I was about to do, but instead of pondering the situation, I threw on my swimming trunks and made my way over to the base of the deleterious waterfall. I grabbed a rope that was on the side of the waterfall, covert in some bushes.…

With my family in front, I stepped onto the tile entryway without taking off my shoes. My soles echoed subtly and strangely in the cavernous, open concept and my soul slowly deflated into the empty space. Sundry clutter was pushed into a corner, backed by boxes holding household items that I wouldn’t miss until they are at the back of the one-car garage and crying to be of assistance. Cautiously, I gave myself a brief tour of the place that I once was able to walk through with my eyes closed, albeit with a couple trips here and there. Though there wasn’t much to trip over there’s still a good deal to cleaned before we could officially call this our old place. I slide open my closet door to find not clothes, but bags and crates and more boxes. Defeated at the sight of so much to still pack, as well as tired, I retreated to where my bed once stood. I began to rebuild my personal space again, and soon I was leaning on my headboard with a warm comforter as a cushion, taking a glance out my window instead of taking a catnap on the cold hardwood floor. The sheer curtains rippled in the cool summer evening breeze, brushing against my skin like a kind ghost and I realized that the real ghost was me. The curtains still hung in the room as the last trace of my presence, but they did not move as I hoped. I had no time to spend in the past, and so I dolefully pull myself out from the spiritual afterlife. I begin to do my duties as to not drag out the…

I like to be away from everyone and just think to myself. My thoughts race in my head like hounds chasing a rabbit. ‘Should I run away and find my family?’ ‘Should I fight back?’. These thoughts clouded my mind until I finally reached my house. I enter the front door and is welcomed with a whispered conversation coming from my parents in the kitchen that is stopped by the time I enter their presence. That was the last straw. I ran to my room, tears swelling in my eyes. I was sick and tired of people pretending that i’m not there and ignoring me. I burst out crying and don't come out of my cave till dinner is ready. I don’t say anything the whole time until something attracts my attention. Apparently my parents were talking to me the whole time, talking about something that made my day. Another me. I couldn’t…

Immediately upon conclusion of my not so reassuring conversation with my father I somewhat less than bravely headed back to the room and my once lovely wife now overcome with fear, anger and most importantly rage at seemingly nothing but me. These memories of a day some seven years ago remain vivid in my mind. In fact, it's amusing what a mind chooses to place into the vault and that which it seems to discard like some Sheik discards used Jaguars.…
