Nick Reve: Film Analysis
The movie is about a director, Nick Reve, trying to make a low budget film. It shows the struggles, hard work, cooperation and frustration that go into shooting a single scene. The first part of the movie shows the crew trying to shoot an emotional scene between a daughter, Nicole, and her mother, Cora. They try to shoot the scene several times, but every time, something goes wrong, and they end up taking multiple takes of the same scene. They try to convince Nick to cut the scene and take it in parts, but he doesn't agree to do so as he feels the beauty of the scene would be lost if he did. One of the takes involves Cora, an old lady, forgetting her lines after multiple takes. They cut the scene, and Nick asks Nicole and Cora to just …show more content…

Nicole, who plays Ellen, is dressed up as a bride. The dream sequence includes a grumpy dwarf named Tito. The scene starts with Ellen saying that she's very hungry (with smoke from the machine all around), and the dwarf enters with an apple and goes around her. She tries to reach out for the apple. The cameraman,Wolf, argues with Nick that the scene would look better if the camera was handheld, but Nick diagrees with him. Nick asks the dwarf to laugh, but he doesn't. After a few unsuccessful takes, the smoke machine runs out of smoke. They fill the gas in the wrong end, and the machine gets destroyed in the middle of the scene. Nick's mother comes to see him. They decide to finish the take without the smoke because the 'dream' still had a dwarf in it. The take again gets disturbed when Nick's mother comes into the scene by mistake. Nick tells Tito to laugh because "Strange things happen in a dream." Finally Tito gets frustrated and leaves the set saying, "I dont even have dreams with dwarves in them! The only place where I've seen dwarves in dreams is in movies like this!" Nick then decides to stop shooting and gives up. His mother then comes up and decides to play Tito's old role. Wolf shoots this with a handheld camera. The scene is shot perfectly in just one take, and they wrap up the scene. The movie ends with everyone feeling a sense of

In collaboration with Merce Cunningham, Atlas Films produced Fractions I in 1977. In Fractions I we are able to recognize how Cunningham’s movement has evolved from Septet, as well as how technology has taken on a role in his choreography. The movement in Fractions I still features balletic lines from the females and athletic jumps from the males, similar to Septet. Watching the piece you feel as if you are watching a technique class due to the way that phrases are repeated and executed in a very specific manor, as well as in the way the movement develops from beginning to end. Differing from Septet though, the body has become much more integrated in the movement often moving in contorted ways. This is demonstrated in the section with Lisa…

The Book of Kells is a lavish bible filled with intricate artwork that was created in 800 CE. Around 1,200 years later an animated movie describing the story behind the creation of the Book of Kells, called The Secret of Kells, was created. Even though the Book of Kells and The Secret of Kells were created 1,200 years apart, the original manuscript influenced the creators and animators of the movie.…

Stunning scenes of landscapes, trees, and clouds fill the scenes of The Revenant. Snow fills the open-void of the wilderness and sunlight bleeds through the spaces between the tall, dark trees. The camera mainly focuses on Hugh Glass as he attempts to take his revenge upon John Fitzgerald, who murdered Hugh’s son. The camera pans smoothly during calm shots of vistas and nature, while the camera rapidly shakes during the intense attacks of the Native Americans. Rivers flow smoothly, and in some shots, Hugh’s fearful, beaten face fills the frame as he struggles to evade the threats of Native Americans. The contrasting nature of the scenes in The Revenant is effective in immersing the viewers in the environment, portraying a message of conservation, and developing a captivating, simplistic storyline.…

Many connections between people are unplanned and unexpected, for example the meeting of Meryl and Nick. Watt reveals their growing love by showing the viewer that they share common characteristics – they both seek relief in their work to help them deal with distressing situations. Nick has photography and Meryl has her paintings. “Cheaper than therapy.” Meryl says. Watts combination of quirky animations and images also helps to initiate the connection between Nick and Meryl. They are both preoccupied with death and disaster. “I’m seeing death everywhere this weekend”, Says Nick and Meryl responds with “So do I”. When they make love for the first time we see an animation of what they are both imagining, their deepest fears. We notice that the animated images become less frightening for example; Nick’s cancer cells shrink. Towards the end of the film when Meryl’s relationship with Nick has developed, her imaginations are less threatening. The ‘black’ children in the animation are laughing as they say “Maybe it was meant to be”, just as Meryl is able to laugh at herself when the…

All characters are framed within a frame at some point during the film. Meryl is framed within her window frame as she images Nick as a gun man, showing her fearful nature. Likewise, Anna is standing in the door way of her apartment when the lyrics “standing in doorways” plays. It suggests how she is trapped and troubled by her predicament of whether to abort her pregnancy or not. Julia and the train driver are main characters who are framed. In segment 2, Julia is framed within the photo itself which is within the computer screen, accentuating her distance from the viewer. While the train driver is framed within a frame as he walks through his house. They are both unreachable and trapped in an hidden emotional sphere. Other camera techniques such as oblique camera angles in segment ten; connectivity, show Anna’s looking down on Andy, emphasising her maturity and his cruel and irresponsible personality. You become so close to what you create that you have no idea if it's any good, and the growing doubt of your own ability along with the fear of wasting so much time and effort will most definitely have you pulling your hair out.…
