He has been known throughout history for his not believing in a transcendent being and even claiming that ‘God is dead’. He believed that human beings act on their own desires, which leaves humans with ‘no choice’ when making a decision. Nietzsche does not believe that humans need God in order to fulfill human happiness. He believes this because when one removes this higher being or figure, individuals will act based on their feelings and desires, which helps them to have power in their choices. This is what separates a good human from a bad human. A good human is strong, while a bad human is weak. However, Nietzsche still believes that humans do not have a choice when faced with certain situations throughout the course of their lives. Again, he believes that freedom and responsibility are merely illusions and non-existent. Nietzsche thinks that humans are irresponsible because they lack the knowledge in thinking they are free, when in reality they are not. Nietzsche thought that pleasure was good while pain was bad, and that humans always choose pleasure over pain. However, that is not always the case. Even in the Bible it is written, “No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it”. Saint Paul speaks of enduring suffering in times of hardship. It is possible to be faced with a situation in which one is uncomfortable and might experience a time of suffering. However, this does not mean that one cannot endure and push through to become a stronger person. Take for example a student. A student must pass tests, in order to do well in his classes, to graduate and to get a good job. If the student does not wish to study for his tests, because that would cause him a great deal of suffering, then that could have a negative impact on how well that student does in his classes and in his future. That individual will ultimately face the consequences of his decision. He had a choice, a free choice, to study or to not study. He freely chose not to study, which resulted in not passing or graduating, and then possibly living a life that he does not desire. Nonetheless if suffering does indeed make one a stronger human
