It was Anzac day in 2017, and we just arrived home from marching in the Anzac parade in Albany. My Nan was outside and my Mum was inside when all of a sudden my Nan started yelling “snake, Jodie help, snake”. My mum ran outside to where my Nan and our dog Nugget were, she saw a tiger snake rearing up at Nugget and striking him on the face. Nugget grabbed the snake through it up in the air, as the snake hit the ground it bit Nugget again.
Mum and Nan were both yelling at Nugget to come to them, this was when I ran outside to see what was happening. My Mum ran over to Nugget and pulled his collar towards her to get him away from the snake. Just as she grabbed Nugget the snake reared up and tried to bite her. As Mum was …show more content…
My neighbour Nathan came running over and used an oar to put the snake in a bucket. He then helped my Mum put Nugget in the back of the car. By this time Nugget was not breathing very well and all his legs were now paralysed.
Nathan told my Mum to start driving to the vet straight away. My Mum left and Nathan rang the vet and told him what had happened and told him it was a tiger snake that had bitten Nugget. The vet said he would leave straight away and would meet Mum at the vet clinic.
When Mum arrived at the vet clinic she said it was very scary because Nugget was not moving at all. The vet had to pick him up and run him into the clinic. He told my Mum that they had to work very fast and that she would need to help him. Nugget was trying to vomit whilst the vet put the drip in his leg. The vet checked Nuggets vital signs and told Mum they needed to start administering the anti-venom very slowly otherwise Nugget would go into shock. My mum started the anti-venom through the drip which took 2 hours to put in. Nugget started to stabilise after this but the vet said it was going to be a very long night and we had to wait to see if he was going to …show more content…
Nathan explained that it was a tiger snake and showed us the yellow underneath, he said this is the best way to identify a tiger snake and that they are extremely dangerous and we were to never go near them if we saw one. The snake was about a metre long and still looked very angry in the bucket. Nathan took the snake away and put it back in the bush across the road from our house.
Mum arrived home and explained to us what they had done to Nugget and what the vet had told her, we were all very upset and just prayed that Nugget would be ok.
Two hours later after Mum got home the vet rang to say that Nugget wasn’t doing very well and they had to go back to the vet to give him another dose of anti-venom. The vet decided that he needed to stay overnight with Nugget at the clinic.
We all didn’t get much sleep that night worrying about Nugget, but we received a call very early in the morning from the vet to say that Nugget was doing much better and was able to stand up. We all went to the vet in the afternoon to see Nugget and it was the best feeling ever to see him wagging his tail. The vet said he had been bitten at least 6 times and was a very lucky dog. He couldn’t believe he was still alive after what he had been
