As a student nurse you have approached a patient and their parent to inform them that they will be discharged from hospital in 2 days. The patients parent appears concerned at this news and explains that they are an only parent and are worried they will not be able to cope at home, they ask you if there is any help available to them.

This assignment will explore the above statement in relation to the role of a student nurse and what actions the student would be expected to take adhering to the Nursing and Midwifery Code (NMC, 2008).     Professionalism is a crucial part of success in any work field and profession, however, within nursing, professionalism can be difficult to understand and maintain. Professionalism means suitably conducting one’s self in an appropriate way, in any working environment and respecting one’s surroundings and colleagues. Punctuality, professional mannerisms, confidentiality and a positive approach to work situations are all factors which create ‘professionalism’. Within nursing and many other areas of care work, this can be somewhat confusing. A nurse must treat everyone with dignity and humanity, be compassionate, caring, empathetic and warm, but in some cases, showing these emotions may be considered as unprofessional or inappropriate. In nursing, it is important to review one’s own actions to ensure the Code of Conduct is always kept as highly as possible. In such a profession it is easy to get emotionally attached to a patient or patient’s family, however the ‘role’ must be kept as a carer, to explain health conditions, advice on treatment and to guide. A nurse’s role is not one of a friend, but is one to offer subtle comfort as appropriately as possible. Hands on contact can be frowned upon. Guidelines and Code of Conduct is set by the NMC to help both nurses and midwives maintain the highest levels of professionalism.     Inter-professional collaborations are invaluable relationships between healthcare professionals that are formed with the sole purpose of providing optimum help for a service user (Hornby and Atkins, 2000). Goodman and Clemow (2010) explain that collaborative practice is actually based around two ideas. The first is that nurses need to be able to work with other professionals, and the second is that they need to be able to work with ‘people’. They go on to explain that the concept of collaborative practice is based on the idea that excellent patient care relies on the expertise of a number of care providers. Day (2006) points out that actually defining what collaborative working is, is very complex, and that in order to understand what exactly collaborative working means within the context of nursing, an understanding of what collaboration is, is required, along with the ability to apply this understanding to a number of other terms which are often used both interchangeably and synonymously with this one in literature. According to Day, collaboration can be defined as individuals or agencies working together in order to achieve something that neither can achieve alone. This, however, is not to be confused with the meaning of inter-professional working, which is defined as professionals from different disciplines working between and among each other for the mutual benefit of those involved. Understanding that the two phrases are in fact different in nature allows us to have a more comprehensive understanding of what it means to use the term inter-professional collaborative practice, and this can be defined as professionals from different disciplines working together towards a common goal in order to achieve something that neither can achieve alone.…
