In today's day and age, a major problem facing America is obesity. You may be asking yourself, 'what does the school system have to do with how heavy kids are becoming?'. The reality is our schools play a big role in preventing health issues for our youth, not just obesity, but also health problems such as anorexia or mental health issues a child may be facing. It is the school's responsibility to ensure that their students are healthy physically and mentally.

Well, the development of a student's health problems can have sourced from anywhere, but at the school place, students can develop unhealthy habits on various grounds. The cafeteria, usually at public schools, do not provide many healthy options for all its students. At my school, the trend seems to be that healthy options that are provided are significantly more expensive that other food choices. A salad more than twice the price than french fries? Yes, this trend is unfair to students who come from low-income families. The problem is schools are neglecting certain students by not providing healthy food choices accessible to all. I believe all students should have equal opportunities to a healthy lifestyle, regardless their economic situation. So, how can the school fix this problem? The school needs to raise their cafeteria funding in order make healthier foods accessible to all students. Does the football team really need new helmets every year? The problem is students are experiencing so much stress that can provoke more serious mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety, and the schools are not doing any better by implementing fear of failure to its students. High school can already be a very stressful time for teenagers, the pressure of doing well academically, working a job, fitting in, and discovering who you are, etc. can result in the loss of interest at school, or even as far as substance abuse and seriousness behavior. It is a teacher's job to recognize the signs of a mental issue a student may have. Moreover, it is the school's responsibility to provide help for a student who may be suffering any sort of problem. How can a school provide help for its student mental problems? A simple solution, in order for school's to ensure their student become more mentally stable, is to provide Psychologists and Psychiatrists. The school may argue that they already provide a school nurse. Despite providing a school nurse, the nurse hardly has the qualification to sincerely help a student with a serious issue. Even if acquiring a Psychiatrist is unpractical for a school, the best thing a school can do is inform all its students that it's okay to receive help and to openly educate them of the seriosness of mental illnesses such as anxiety or
