Odwalla Strategy Memo
DATE: November 4, 1996
TO: Stephen Williamson, President and Chief Operating
FROM: Monica Pearlman 21 Bascom Drive East 101
SUBJECT: Addressing Contamination linked to Odwalla Juice Products

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Odwalla, Inc., a health-conscious juice producer, must challenge effects that its apple juice product is contaminated and has been linked to the causes of several outbreaks of the E. coli virus. It is a truly unlucky circumstance when product contaminations happen and especially unfortunate when customers become sick as an outcome. These situations can ruin customer confidence in a company; but, a well thought out strategy will allow Odwalla to continue positive relationships with customers, keep the brand significance, and maintain consumer loyalty.

Background
Odwalla, Inc., is worth nearly $400 million, has grown steadily rising to $59 million in 1996
Approximately 66 people reported sickness of consuming Odwalla juice products
On October 30, 1996, the Seattle-King County Department of Public Health and the Washington State Department of Health reported to Odwalla, Inc. about a possible link between the Odwalla apple juice products and several cases of E. coli
Unpasteurized fruit may be the cause of the E.Coli bacteria
The reason why we don’t pasteurize is to avoid changing the taste of our products

Discussion
Odwalla’s most significant resources are its’ strong customer loyalty and brand recognition for providing “all natural” juice products. Since the company’s main ability focuses on the all-natural production procedure and the idea of “nourishing the body whole”, it is look at as a high quality product. So, the assumption that Odwalla is producing juice products with E. Coli bacteria and placing them into the marketplace could cause a major problem with its consumers which will lead to a negative impact on the

For many years, Company Q's customers have been requesting health conscience and organic products sold at Company Q’s stores. The company's efforts to provide this for its customers have been weak at best. The company's management has the ethical duty to be positively reactive to its customers requests, so long as those requests are not illegal, immoral, irresponsible or unethical. Since requests are for products that benefit the health of customers,…

It is very important to know not only what types of bacteria are in a sample but also how many of them are present. After a 2010 outbreak, founder Jimmy John Liautaud switched the sandwich chain to clover sprouts after Salmonella illnesses were associated with alfalfa sprouts. According to the Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration, unwashed or lightly rinsed vegetables can harbor pathogenic bacteria and have been implicated in numerous food borne infections. Food manufacturers are required by the FDA to monitor the number and type of bacteria in their products. Very few of the things we eat or drink are bacteria free. They merely have greatly reduced numbers of “harmless” bacteria. It is often necessary to determine how many live bacteria are actually in a sample, especially when measuring growth rates or determining disinfectant effectiveness. This involves MacConkey agar which is a selective and differential…

Even though Trevor’s conduct was legal by not having to report test results to the FDA, it was unethical for him to sell goods that had once tested positive for salmonella. If Trevor had followed the six basic guidelines for making ethical business decisions, he would not still have sold the contaminated goods. Guideline numbers 2, 3, 4, & 5 apply the most in this particular case as rules and procedures, values, conscience, and promises have all been violated to some extent.…

Companies have affected their customers negatively in many, many ways by being careless, negligent and putting out products that can be tainted or altered in some way and have been very harmful to one 's health even to the point of death by use. Many people are unaware of some recalls and continue to use whatever product it is that is defective or contaminated. I will be talking about a couple of different companies and touching on what they have done or not done in order to correct a problem with their product/s that have been recalled. There are a lot of reasons as to why companies do not take action right away such as losing profits, losing customers, being sued or even going bankrupt. Having a positive image is should be on the top of the ethics list.…

When walking into Orange Leaf, the bright orange, green, and white décor invite you in. Then, an undeniably sweet scent allures one into assuming their product will consist of top quality and deliciousness. However, when examined closely, the truth reveals itself. With 16 flavors to choose from, pinning down the flavor most desired stands easier said than done. Though almost always in this store, a machine stands broken or a sticky mess, forcing the consumer to decide against that particular flavor. Besides that, Orange Leaf remains one of the only frozen yogurt companies that actually makes their yogurt in the store. By mixing milk, powdered yogurt, and an artificial flavoring, “frozen yogurt” has been conceived. Typically, froyo shops order their yogurt made in a factory with regulations and comes in gallon jugs. When yogurt actually comes from the store made by the employees, ensuring consistency and quality one hundred percent of the time remains impossible. The toppings in Orange Leaf do not measure up to par either. Although kept refrigerated, the fruit often looks slimy and possesses a mushy texture as if it has been sitting out. Cross contamination has also become a present issue with many of the toppings. With nuts as one of the topping options, cross contamination can pose a major health hazard.…

On October 30, 1996, the state of Washington Environmental Health Services notified the CEO of Odwalla, Stephen Williamson, of a possible epidemiological link between several cases of E. Coli 0157:H7 and their apple juice. Williamson had a choice at that time to either ignore the problem until there was an official confirmation, which did not come until November 5, 1996, or voluntarily instigate a recall of the tainted products. His choice to order the recall immediately launched their survival strategy. Williamson completed this recall within 48 hours of the terrible news. This recall strategy was not legally necessary. However, it was the ethical and responsible thing to do.…

Congress passed the original Pure Food and Drugs Act in 1906. It has evolved into the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is now an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHS) (FDA Milestones, 2006). The FDA’s main objective is to protect and promote public health through regulating and testing foods and new products, overseeing the research, development, regulation, and recall of products already on the shelves for consumer use. We will further define the FDA, its responsibilities, and choose a product to show how the regulatory requirements of the FDA impacts consumer choices. We chose an ingredient used to prevent bacterial contamination in many consumer products called Triclosan. Since the last FDA review of this ingredient, Triclosan has had questionable test results warranting a review of its use (Triclosan: What Consumers Should Know, 2012).…

EssayAnswer: Easy on the Wallet or Easy On The Earth Carly Le Blanc’s performance is highly exceptional. There’s no reason for her to quit and drop the class. She could have reached even farther with the knowledge and skills she had for her marketing strategy. But then, being in business one should consider not only the profit but also its social responsibility towards his/her country and countrymen. If I were Carly Le Blanc, I would rather prefer to order the t-shirts from San Francisco T-shirts though the price is quite high but then it’s worth the quality not to mention that it uses an organic and eco-friendly kind of materials, compared to Chinese manufacturer who is just producing quantity rather than quality t-shirts. Besides, she could also extend help to the workers of that company considering that it’s recession period and eventually to the country’s economy. After all most of the businesses that are successful and stable are those who produce not only good but quality products.Answer: The Case of Nutritional Foods If I were Fred James, I would rather investigate the “Flow of Food” (from picking, transporting and up to the processing of the fresh products) and check if HACCP System (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) was strictly observed by the food handlers and find out in which part of the flow that is considered as CCP ( Critical Control Point) that caused contamination. After able to find the cause of contamination a corrective action should be done to stop or prevent the same situation on the next production. As part of the social responsibility, it would be wise to recall the products from the retailers and inform the consumers (through media) immediately to return the unused products before an outbreak may happen due to the contaminated food. The company (Nutritional Foods) will take the responsibility to pay all the hospital bills/medications to those consumers who suffered food poisoning after eating…
