The organization that our team will analyze for this exercise is the Detroit Lions. The product that the Detroit Lions provides is sports entertainment, which it does through various means centered around the fielding of a professional football team.
b) Study the organization and obtain data (using various survey/observation and communication methods)
Both members of our team are intimately familiar with the Detroit Lions from many years of being fans, watching games, talking with friends, and following the players and team via traditional and social media. Through this familiarity, combined with strategic internet research, we have studied the Detroit Lions and will present data regarding the organization from the Total Quality Management (TQM) perspective.
c) Review various TQM characteristics discussed in the class and in the literature (Text, Reference Books, web sites of NIST & ISO)
The understood meaning of TQM is to determine how an organization establishes a vision, allocates resources, and implements continuous improvement to meet or exceed customer expectations for all processes, customers, and suppliers. While these characteristics are easily attributable to physical products and manufacturing processes, they are less clearly identified / translated for the delivery of sports entertainment. The primary principles that we identified as being relevant to the Detroit Lions are customer focus, leadership, involvement of people, continual improvement, and mutually beneficial supplier relationships. The specific areas under consideration to rate the Lions against these TQM areas are ticket prices, concession prices, team quality, quality of the venue/stadium, social media effectiveness, and team management.
d) Develop a list of TQM characteristics that would apply to the organization and analyze the state
