It is generally regarded that contact sports are beneficial to children. This is due to the fact that the majority of bone density material is developed when the person is young. This is beneficial to people because many bone diseases such as osteoporosis are connected to low bone density and inactivity as a young adult. On the flip-side when competing in high impact sport there is a very high chance of some sort of injury occurring along the way. For example if someone dislocates their shoulder playing rugby, it is more than likely that this will trouble them in the future. In addition to this when playing contact sports, the joints that are covered in articular cartilage can be worn away at a more rapid rate. Indeed, some injuries even lead to the cartilage being taken out altogether. This is a negative effect of contact sports on the skeletal system of young people as they may well end up suffering from osteoarthritis later in life. Osteoarthritis is thought to be related to cartilage being worn down to the point that the bone is no longer protected.…

Sports injuries have skyrocketed above national averages in the last 24 years. There are going to be injuries, no matter what sports you play. Two of the most common sports are baseball and soccer. Although these sports differ, the types of injuries are similar. How do we prevent the injuries? How do we treat them?…
The Giblin Physical Therapy Clinic will work together to provide the student-athletes with injury education and information. Information will be obtained from the physical therapists, certified athletic trainer, or athletic training student. Consideration of injury education will include the type of injury, mechanism, anatomical location, prevention, severity, and treatment. Information regarding healthy lifestyle choices will include diet, exercise, physical health, and mental health.…
Many sports related injuries do not just happen to professional teams but occur on youth, high school, and college teams. Concussions, knee sprains, stress fractures happen often and are now considered common injuries. Parents do not get overly worried, like they should, due to the severity of these injuries that happen to their children. In reality, the real problems are how parents encourage their children to be extremely competitive on the field and play aggressively, the amount of traumatic injuries that occur on the field, and how it is affecting the futures of young athletes. These are the reasons why youth sports are becoming too violent to be safe for children.…
Finally, sports can cause way to many injuries. Way too many kids are getting hurt in all kinds of sports and it’s not good. The article High School, College Football Comes With Risk says, “… found that boys aged 10 to 14 were most likely to end up in the nation’s emergency departments with a traumatic brain injury, and that activities such as bicycling, horseback riding, football, basketball and use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) were most often to blame.” This quote is saying that boys 10 to 14 were more likely to end up in the er than older/younger boys when doing things like sports. The same article also states, “… the researchers estimate there were 517,726 football-related injuries during the 2005-2006 season at the high school level…
“A lot of teenagers are into high school sports. An injury to a high school athlete can be a very disappointment for the teen and the family. The pressure to play can lead to making decisions that may lead to additional injury with long term injuries. High school sports injuries can cause problems that require surgery and may lead to arthritis pain later on in life. Teenage athletes are injured at about the same rate as real professional athletes, but injuries that affect high school athletes are way more often and different from those that affect adult athletes. This is mostly because high school athletes are often still growing. Growth is normally uneven bones, which pull at tight muscles and tendons.”…
Sports medicine is a lot more than people think it is. It is not just running out on the football field when someone gets injured and walking them to the sidelines and making sure they are okay, it is not just telling someone not to play a sport for a certain amount of time so that they can let their body take a rest. It is looking into the body and figuring out which muscles and bones cannot handle as much pressure and pain as the others. It is surgery and sometimes crushing people’s dreams of never being able to play their favorite sport again.…
Over the past decade, soccer has been becoming an even more popular sport than it once was. With this popularity though, comes a greater chance for injury. Most soccer-related injuries include ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tears or meniscus tears, but there is a much more dangerous injury making up “22% of the total injuries in football” (Al-Kashmiri 189). Note, that in this instance, and many more, “football” is referring to the non-American term for soccer. A concussion, defined by Monica E. Maher, is “a complex pathophysiological process, induced by traumatic biomechanical forces” (271). Since soccer is a growing popular sport, especially in young children, there are many ways for amateur players to get injured.…
Playing sports can be very fun and entertaining, but there can also be risks that come along the way that detract from the enjoyment. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, as stated before Nearly 30 million U.S. children and youth are involved in organized sports. Also “high school athletes account for an estimated 2 million injuries, 500,000 doctor visits, and 30,000 hospitalizations each year” (Alvarez, 2014). As the article says there are too many teens who play in high school sports that are getting injured year round. The number would largely decrease if someone who is certified in sports injuries, like an athletic trainer, was there at games and…
The injury experience of 5,128 boys age 8 to 15 years old, weight 22.5 to 67.5 kg [50 to 150 lb]) participating in youth football revealed an overall rate of significant injury of 5%, with 61% classified as moderate and 38.9% as major injuries. Finally, that's about 1.33 per team per year, no catastrophic injuries occurred, and it was rare for a permanent disability to result from any injury, and all football players are aware of Newtons First Law of Motion, the…
When parents put too much pressure on their child to play a certain sport the child often carries a much higher risk of injury. Children who focus on one sport repeat the same motion continuously while playing and practicing. For example, surgeon Marc Philippon once saw a case where a 25 year old man had been playing a goaltender in hockey competitively from a young age and needed a hip replacement. This occurred because the repetitive butterfly style motion used to stop pucks from coming into the goal, pulled on the still developing hip joint (Helliker D.1). Doctors claim that they are seeing young athletes…
CTE is a deadly brain disease that can develop from the repetitive hits in contact sports. Many kids start playing sports at young ages. But due to their young age their brains and bodies aren’t fully developed yet, leaving them more vulnerable to injuries, mainly to their brains. With more and more kids playing contact sports at even younger ages the risk of more kids getting hurt is increasing. In children ages 15 years and under, the estimated incident rate of TBI, or traumatic brain injury is 180 per 100,000 children per year of which approximately 85% are categorized as mild injuries in the US, it has been estimated that 1 million children sustain TBI’s annually and that TBI accounts for more than 250,000 pediatric hospital admissions as well as more than 10% of all visits to the emergency service settings. (British Journal of Sports Medicine…
While I was participating in the athletic training clinics, I had a very interesting, educative experience. There were many different parts that I enjoyed while engaging in the athletic training clinics. One of things I enjoyed about being in the clinics was being able to talk to the different athletic training students and preceptors; as well as, seeing them utilize their skills they had learned from their pervious classes and preceptors. It was also enriching to be able to watch a patient improve over time through the various techniques used such as stretching, taping, and exercising. Further, I saw many different injuries that consisted of both the upper and lower extremities of the body.…
