Introduction: Bullying. I’m sure it has happened to all of us at one point or another but it is one of those things that should never happen. Growing up I personally did not have trouble with being bullied because I had and still have today the courage to say what is on my mind and I didn’t and don’t care what people think of me. It’s one of those things that you think about it will never happen to me but in reality it can happen to anyone. In today’s world though not many kids have that confidence, it’s all about being cool and being in with the in crowd instead of being yourself. So I am here today to give you the facts on what bullying is, why it happens, and what we can do to prevent it.
Body
I. So what is bullying exactly? According to stop bullying.gov, the definition of bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time.
A. In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include two things. One is an imbalance of power and two repetition.
1. An Imbalance of power is when kids who bully use their power such as …show more content…
physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people (stopbullying.org). 2. Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once. These include but not restricted to, actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.
B. So, why does bullying happen? No one is a hundred percent why it happens but there are many reasons and theories as to one might bully but according to Bullyingnoway.gov those include: 1. They think it 's fun, or that it makes them popular or cool, they feel more powerful or important, or they want to get their own way all the time, they feel insecure or lack confidence or are trying to fit in with a group, they are fearful of other children 's differences, they are jealous of another child, they are unhappy, they are copying what they have seen others do before, or what has been done to them. 2. As kids get older their relationships with their peers and people around them increase but the bullying and the reporting of bullying decreases. Many bystanders do not intervene when seeing someone get bullied. Most people do not intervene when seeing someone is being bullied for a variety of reasons like they fear for themselves, they think someone else will help, or they think there actions won’t make a difference.
II.
Now the facts. According to Do Something.org over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year. 1 in 4 teachers see nothing wrong with bullying and will only intervene 4% of the time. Approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying, 1 in 7 students in grades k-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying, 56% of students have personally witnessed some type of bullying a school, 71% of students report incidents of bullying as a problem at their school, 90% of 4th through 8th graders report being victims of bullying, 1 out of 10 students drop pot of school because of repeated bullying, Harassment and bullying have been linked to 75% of school-shooting
incidents. III Now that you know the facts prevention is key. Awareness is I think the most important. The more people know the more likely they are to help someone in need. Next is having the confidence whether it is yourself or someone else being bullied have the confidence to go up to them and to stand your ground makes a big difference. Showing the bully that you are not afraid even if you are in side and showing them that what they are doing is not okay makes a big difference. Lastly, reporting the incident and being persistent in not letting the issue go and making sure someone else knows and will take care of it. Making sure something is done about it and knowing you are stopping a bad cycle is a very rewarding feeling not only for you but the victim as well. Conclusion: In conclusion, whether you are a witness of someone being bullied or being bullied I hope you realize you are not alone in this nation wide problem. Being educated and having the passion to make a difference is what will help solve this problem and make the world a better place. Thank You
