I.Subtopic #1: Y2K
A.Panic and Fear because computers were heavily relied on to carry proper information. B.Time and resources were spent to prevent the problem from happening. C.The Y2K problem was never experienced.
II.Subtopic #2: 2000 Election confusion
A.Florida's 25 electoral votes proved to be the deciding votes. B.Some argued that a confusing ballot layout, known as the "Butterfly Ballot" led some voters to cast their ballots incorrectly. C.Bush had a 537 popular vote lead in Florida.
III.Subtopic #3: September 11, 2001
A.The Event 1.Terrorist hijacked four planes. Two were flown into the twin towers of the world trade center in New
York City, one into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the final plane crash was into a field in Pennsylvannia. 2.Most Americans can remember where they were at the time, and what they were doing, when the tragedy hit the U.S.. 3.Three thousand people died that day, inlcuding polic officers and firefighters who were saving lives when the twin towers collapsed.
B.The aftermath/Who did it? 1.The terrorist group al-Qaeda, led by Osama bin Laden, claimed responsibilty. 2.President Obama announced bin Laden's death on May 1st, 2011, explaining that he was shot by American Special Forces during a raid on his secret compound in Pakistan. 3.Bin Laden was wanted for not only what happened on 9/11, but also for involvment in the the bombings in 1998 of the U.S. Embassies in Tanzania and Kenya.
IV.Subtopic #4: The Space Shuttle Columbia
A.On February 1, 2003, The Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon re-entering the Earth's atmosphere. B.The vessel and its seven crew members died immediately. C.After this unfortunate accident, the space program was put on hold for a while, so investigators could ensure the safety of other astronauts venturing into space.
