PCR Report
For this project I decided to do multiple types of community service to get a mix of experiences. It ranged from helping senior citizens, middle-aged women, and children. The first type of community service that I performed was helping run a workshop for the Psi Otes. Psi Iota Xi is a national charitable organization dedicated to helping others, especially in the fields of speech and hearing, and enriching the world around us. The workshop was put together to help teach each chapter’s treasure how to successfully run a PCR report. The PCR report is an overview of each chapter’s general funds and project funds. The psi otes are transitioning from doing a PCR report by hand to having it on an excel spreadsheet. While in high school, and even …show more content…
I did not really know what we would be doing until I arrived at the hospital and their community service coordinator was talking to us. We spent time collecting donations and using some of the money Psi Otes had in their funds, to go buy coloring books, crayons, and various other little toys to put together a fun little package for children who are receiving painful and extensive treatments. This was very touching because the coordinator expressed how much this meant to the doctors and the children that we were putting in some of our time to help others. She was so happy that she started to cry and this made me feel really good about myself and very much appreciated. After this event and knowing how much my volunteering helped them made me want to continue to help Riley’s Children’s Hospital. The next type of community service I preformed was with a local church in my hometown. They were putting on a Halloween get together. While there, I was setting up tables, decorating, thinking and executing ways to scare children and adults on a hay ride, and overall making sure everyone was have a fun time and enjoying themselves. I enjoyed this a lot because making people happy and have a good time in return made me have fun and enjoy

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

For my service this year, I was involved with Applecross Opal Nursing Home. Opal age care was a great help to me in opening my eyes to the desperate need for an extra pair of hands and the importance of nursing homes. Not only to the individual admitted in, but also to their families and friends. As I would arrive at 12.00 every time, I would go straight into lending a hand with lunch. Handing out the meals, packing away, cleaning up and keeping an eye on a few of the residents was my first job done. Then I would wonder through the compound talking to the residents, playing and colouring in with them and I would gather and assist them to and from their rooms. With all these jobs, you had to keep a look out for and take extra care with some of the more dependant residents.…

The place where I conducted my community service was the Regional Food Bank. The Regional Food Bank receives large quantities of foods, drinks, and other necessities from suppliers throughout the northeast, such as Hannaford or Wal-Mart. Then, at the Regional Food Bank, all of the goods that came in get checked to make sure they aren't expired or have ripped packaging, which means that they can get sorted into boxes to be sent off to families in need or to homeless shelters. The Food Bank provides over 30 million pounds a year of food to 1000 different agencies. Each box at the Food Bank can only weigh 45lbs, so that means that around 660,000 boxes of food are sent.…

My biggest community activity is for Special Olympics of New Jersey. My family and I attend many of the events for SONJ including the Summer Games. I started volunteering by working and playing with the athletes. The area we staffed was where the athletes came to take a break and play with carnival-like games. The ages ranged from little kids to adults. It was fun putting smiles on their faces when you told them they won! It showed me we aren’t any different than them. They still like to do sports and have fun. They love to win prizes as do we. They just have disabilities that make them special. Over all volunteering for SONJ is a fantastic experience and in my opinion every boy and…

A few events that I have helped out with are Give It Back Day, Parent’s Night Out, and the Blood Drive. When I helped out at the Blood Drive, I was a blood buddy and talked to the donators so that they were more comfortable while they were giving blood. Overall, this event had the potential to actually physically save lives and I am glad that I could be a part of it. I went to a client’s house during…

With this group, I had the opportunity to go to the local Willa Gill Center and package CARE packages for the community. After we packaged everything, we were able to sort out clothing and cans that were going to be distributed the next day. Working behind the scenes and helping the workers prepare was very rewarding.…

This organization helps cancer patients find needed bone marrow donors. Finding donors are very difficult and finding matches are even more unlikely. This event made me realize how fortunate I was. I began volunteering more regularly with the same organization as well as places such as Food-share and a retirement home with residents who have memory loss. SAM and the retirement home mattered the most to me because I have close relatives who have schizophrenia and have died from cancer. Volunteering with these organizations made me realize how fortunate I was and inspired me to keep striving. This gave me a new perspective on life and I became more optimistic and outgoing. In addition to volunteering, I found a job, I began weightlifting, and I became much more social. In changing the way I think, I learned that life continues and that I still have time to improve myself.…

Ever since I was a child I was always inspired to help others. Whether it was volunteering or donating or even taking a survey to give my perspective, as long as it was helping someone and making a difference- I always enjoyed it. So going into high school year, I took the initiative of volunteering. Volunteering at the Yale Hospital since high school for four years truly changed me as a person by helping me grow as a better leader. I came out of my comfort zone and the program gave me an opportunity to experiment and try new things. It taught me responsibility, working skills, how to interact with patients, staff, and visitors of the hospital. I was lucky enough to work at different sectors of the hospitals and familiarize myself with the hospital setting. In this process, I learned…

One of my most meaningful service opportunities was volunteering in the Utah Special Olympics last June. I spent the morning and early afternoon managing the Track and Field events of the Summer Games with friends and leaders from my church. This experience gave me a welcome change of perspective and an opportunity to focus on something greater than myself. On this day, I had the privilege of spending time with some of the kindest people I have ever met.…
