In society today, it has become a social norm for parents to always appease their children. Although it is good for children to be happy, some problems could potentially arise if kids are always expecting to get their way. In recreational youth sports, this norm has been integrated by giving children awards for participating rather than the victor receiving a trophy alone. Children should not be given these participation awards, although they may momentarily make the child happy, the long term effects could be harmful.

It acts as an incentive, a goal for a team to achieve, without a goal there is nothing to strive for. Teams compete for a reason, to find who is the most talented and earn a reward from it, whether to earn an actual trophy or just the satisfactory that they were able to come out on top. Most things done in everyday life are for an incentive, people attend school so that they can have the career they want, people go to the gym so they can lift more weight and become more fit, and children do their chores so that they do not get into trouble. But if a reward/consequence is given no matter what, the likelihood of the task to be completed is slim to none.
Lastly, Participation awards should not be given to recreational child sports because, these awards are not given at school level athletics or beyond. If the child decides they want to play a sport beyond the rec. league they could possibly be disappointed in not receiving their participation metal. There is no need to have this predicament when they could save the child from disappointment by not giving them the reward in the first place. The idea of participation awards is to have everyone feel included, it is a good feeling to be involved. To be a part of a team and to be a good team player is an important skill that should be learned by everyone. By being rewarded for participating, you make everyone feel equal, although the scoreboard might say different, they are all a part of a team and work together for a purpose.
