Passion For Medicine Personal Statement
My desire for medicine derived when I started my AS levels, specifically studying biology and chemistry. Learning about the workings of the human body, the practical work of dissection and a range of analytical techniques particularly fascinate me because each of the topics require attention to detail, observational and enquiry skills. I believe my natural scientific ability and the social aspect of a medicine career suits me perfectly. The opportunity to study medicine would involve life long learning and an ever changing profession, the course would not only widen my primary scientific knowledge but also broaden my research skills. My love for furthering my knowledge and my curiosity into health, diseases and defences of the body is why I have a passion for medicine.

From August this year I have been gaining work experience in a care home for a couple of days a week. The time there has made me realise how much one to one attention is needed to care for the elderly residents for everyday tasks. This has shown me a more realistic view of medicine and as a carer you must be easily adaptable to any situation to suit the needs of a patient. I am fully aware of the current ageing population and how it is changing the demands of the NHS, this would obviously have an impact on the future duties of doctors. Furthermore my

Although organising activities for a large group of lively eight to eleven year olds was problematic at times, I learnt that being assertive enabled me to engage with the children and helped me gain their respect. In addition to assisting as a young leader, I learnt fundamental fire safety knowledge, CPR training and aided in a weekend cubs camp. During school I had a chance to develop my leadership skills further, by working as a year 7 mentor, attending school council and raising money for the Rett Syndrome

Providing a better care should be a mutual goal between carers and organisations or employers they work for. To reach this goal, adequate support is necessary right from the start. Thorough interviews can help select an individual most suitable for the position. Induction prepares carers for the tasks involved with the care service and helps carers to take on the job with confidence. Protocols and guidelines give care workers detailed description on how to act in certain situations and they build a set of rules and policies that carers need to follow. Additional training can help carers gain the right skills and ensure their knowledge of good care practice is up to date. Making care workers accountable for their actions, for example by keeping records, can help improve the level of service they provide. Giving the evidence of their work is encouraging carers to perform their tasks as they are expected, as the evidence of bad practice can result in punishment. However, too much paperwork can lead cares away from service users, who can end up missing out on the support they need. Lack of resources decreases quality of services, as it can lead to work overload which puts a lot of strain on carers, makes the work and the environment they work in less enjoyable, and it can be a cause of bad practice.…

There are four types of fats. Although there are bad fats and better fats, they are necessary to support cell growth and give your body energy. The bad fats are saturated fats and trans fats which are more solid at room temperature like a stick of butter and trans fats are liquid such as vegetable oil. Theses fats raise bad cholesterol levels and clog arteries putting you at risk for heart disease. Monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are the better fats that can lower bad cholesterol levels and are beneficial when consumed in moderation.…

A physician assistant is a state license medical professional. Under the physician’s supervision, they are trained to examine patients, diagnose injuries and diseases, and provide treatment. Walter Cronkite states, “I covered the Vietnam War. I remember the lies that were told, the lives that were lost - and the shock when, twenty years after the war ended, former Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara admitted he knew it was a mistake all along.” On November 1,1955, President Eisenhower deplays the Military Assistance Advisory Group to train the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (Cuny 1955). The United States government should pay reparations to African Americans as a means of admitting their wrong-doing and making amends. The damages African Americans have sustained from White America's policy of slavery have been agonizing and inhumane. Therefore, I am in favor of reparations for African Americans. The effect of slavery has been an enduring issue within the African American community. Many of us are cognizant of the harm racism brought to the African American race, conveyed through slavery, racial segregation and discrimination. African Americans suffered many atrocities, but the greatest damage done to them was the destruction of they're original identity. African Americans no longer have a native language or any African customs to connect them to Africa. Today, African Americans are connected together because they all share a common foundation-the horrendous experience of slavery-and the great effort to conquer its lingering result.(www.AcedemicLibrary.com)…

“Curiosity is one of the permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous intellect.” The curiosity that Samuel Johnson refers to in this quote is something that I feel itching at me every day, especially since I have begun my journey in the world of medicine. Through my experiences, I have realized that Internal medicine is the field in which I will be able to use my compassion towards others, not only to help them, but also to constantly nourish my own curiosity for medical knowledge.…

Over the last two years, I have assisted elders with countless baths and ambulation programs. While these skills are critical for being a CNA, I have been acquiring other necessary skills that will enable me to become the best physician assistant that I can be. Namely, I have learned the importance of bedside manners, how to get to know each individual’s personality, and determine how I can help to make them feel special. I have mastered the art of patience while redirecting elders with dementia back to the present day. Every day, I work with other caregivers as a team to deliver the best personal care possible.…

I am interested in pursing the major I chose above because I have developed a passion for medicine through my own health obstacles. I suffer from Chronic Migraines, which has caused me to spend a great deal of my life in doctor's offices. Positive experiences with my doctors lead to me idolizing them as a young child; so much so that I memorized the every bone in the body at the age of five. This passion stayed alive and well as I grew older, however my admiration began to transition from the doctors themselves to the subject. This all stemmed from my own health; I wanted to know exactly what was happening with my body and why. Now, I want to dedicate my life to the subject and possibly be the doctor that inspires someone to discover their…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

As a phlebotomist and young college student, I knocked on the door to find my fourth chemotherapy patient of the day unresponsive. It was my first “code blue.” A team of healthcare professionals rushed into the room and my attention was directed towards the physician assistant (PA) who was leading the team as he implemented advanced cardiac life support protocol. Witnessing the empathy, compassion and wisdom of the PA as he updated the family on the care plan for the patient, while spending the time to explain to the family and ensuring that all questions were answered strengthened my desire to develop the same compassionate interactions with a family and patients as a PA.…

I started my first year of college with my life prearranged. I had a ridiculous notion that everything was going to be a piece of cake. I was going to join different clubs, do lots of research, make the dean’s list, make my parents proud and attend as many parties as I could. However, now when I look back, I realized that I was too comfortable in my life. I thought I was ready to overcome every obstacle that was thrust upon me but I was sadly mistaken. College was a culture shock. I concluded that college is an entirely different universe, then high school. My GPA dropped for the first time in my life from a 3.7 in high school to a 2.8. The decline in my GPA made me realize that my journey to becoming a doctor is not always going to be easy. It made me hunger to go to medical school even more, to overcome the academic and emotional hurdles, and…

I have learnt to be tolerant and to understand other people’s cultures, to respect beliefs and values of other people. This excited me, and I felt I wanted to find out how much I had learnt from this module and what to apply to my placement. I wanted to find out if the patients had individual rights at these homes. I was keen on observing how the staff cared for the aged, and to see if the standard set by the Care Homes Regulatory Office were being met. I was surprised to find that the department of health has stipulated the National Minimum Standard for the Care homes for Older People. I also felt apprehensive about being excluded by the carers, on the groups of respecting the patient’s private needs, if any. Nevertheless I was also concerned about the new environment of working in hand with the carers who understood what was expected from them. This was a challenge for me I then confirmed my…
