Over the last two years, I have assisted elders with countless baths and ambulation programs. While these skills are critical for being a CNA, I have been acquiring other necessary skills that will enable me to become the best physician assistant that I can be. Namely, I have learned the importance of bedside manners, how to get to know each individual’s personality, and determine how I can help to make them feel special. I have mastered the art of patience while redirecting elders with dementia back to the present day. Every day, I work with other caregivers as a team to deliver the best personal care possible. Although the CNA profession is rather straightforward regarding care, I am always searching for new learning opportunities. I admired how the physician assistant could be the first assistant to the surgeon and was as involved in replacement as the surgeon was. When I first showed interest, I remember my great aunt telling me about how she worked as a nurse alongside some of the first physician assistants in the 1960’s. I remember her also telling me that the nurses treated the physician assistants terribly as if they were not there. Those physician assistants had to fight to become just as respected as the doctors. Similar to the first physician assistants I have had to overcome conflict in my life. When I was in high school, I was on the senior council, and I believed our advisor was overcharging the senior dues; I fought for what I believed in and the school investigated the advisor in question and found a lapse in money handling. Also, I am an advocate for the polycystic kidney disease foundation. My role as an advocate is to educate the public about the disease and to write letters to legislators about current issues that can impact patients with PKD. My determination and advocacy skills along with my passion for learning are what draws me to the physician assistant
