During the course of my high school career, I have developed a strong passion for the organization named the Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). FCCLA is a Career and Technical Student Organization that focuses on building students into better leaders for their families, careers, and communities. Furthermore, FCCLA teaches students practical skills that will be useful throughout their lifetimes. This organization has become an important part of my life because it has shaped me into the leader I am today. I began in the organization as a member and participant in competitive events, I have now worked my way up to being my chapter’s President and the Missouri State First Vice President. My leadership experience in FCCLA, especially my experience as a member of the Missouri State…

In considering which path to take in graduate school, I immediately had a flashback to when I would travel with my mother and care for my younger siblings while she worked as a counselor to provide assistance with psychosocial support and mental health care to communities, families and individuals in conflict and post-conflict situations. Having the opportunity to observe her and the organization change so many people’s lives while providing them with hope, planted the seed of nurturing and counseling in my heart. Since middle school I have devoted my time to taking on every opportunity that comes my way to volunteer with helping my community better the lives of our youths.…
Imagine leaving your SI session at the John Peace Library and walking into your freshman writing course a few minutes late only to find your peers in a panic. The world as you know it has come to an end. The dead walk among the living, surprisingly, your class has bound together to survive and thrive in this horrible situation. My role in the rowdy crew of UTSA Road Runners would be conflict mediator and group psychologist, I plan on easing the impending conflicts that will arise from the stress and overpopulation.…
My personal connection to developing leadership extends beyond my professional experience, to volunteering at community events and conducting free meditation programs. I meet with various local community leaders and get a unique perspective of the challenges facing today’s world.…
While at Syracuse University, I have had the opportunity to grow while being able to give to a community that has welcomed me. I have been working with the Literacy Corps for almost two years and it has enabled me to augment my skills in leadership, communication and in becoming an overall better person and professional. Literacy Corps is a program that allows students at Syracuse University to dive in first hand with the community, and work with local schools in the Syracuse area. As a tutor, I have been able to engage one on one with students and it has provided me and the students I’ve worked with valuable lessons.…
Mrs. Freeman stated the only profession that she was ever interested in was teaching, but it wasn’t until she taught at a magnet school whereas a conference center was part of the classroom setting. It was brought to her attention by several faculty members and the school principal of her great counseling skills. Mrs. Freeman noticed some students who were having problems at school used the Pros and Cons strategy as well as The Reality Theory to work through some issues. Mrs. Freeman had just been using these strategies so she was thrilled to see the strategies in the real world. It was at that moment when Mrs. Freeman noticed how she loved listening to the students work through different issues and decided that it would be a dream to have such a profession. (R. Freeman, personal communication, June 15,2009)…

After coming back from the camp I have continued to use my voice and speak my opinion. Being confident has led me to be distinguished from my fellow peers at the University of Delaware. I was given the opportunity to be a teachers’ assistant for a 300 level nutrition counseling course. My duties were hands-on and included leading an inter-disciplinary approach to education with the nutrition and theatre departments. Theatre students were trained to act as patients and nutrition students had the opportunity to practice their assessment, counseling and communication skills. I was in charge of making sure the sessions ran smoothly and addressed any questions or concerns students had. With my commitment and interpersonal skills I was a Women of Promise Recipient and I received a junior…
My first and highest interest is homelessness and housing. I find myself passionate about wanting to give homeless or underprivileged individuals and/or families a fresh start. Nothing beats connecting individuals to the right resources, watching them take control back over their lives, and striving to reach their fullest potential. A newer area of interest I have is international social work. I keep finding myself drawn to global poverty and the affects poverty has on the individuals and/or families such as little to no schooling, poor health, high disease rates, starvation, and war. Ultimately, I am interested in helping restore dignity within these individuals and communities by advocacy and through breaking down development barriers.…
I have been involved in Model United Nations since high school, and it had been such an educational and engaging experience when I look back as a college undergraduate. In Model United Nations conferences, no matter I was a delegate — writing position papers and draft resolutions, or a dais member — composing background guides, I had been always receiving something that was unable to earn in a traditional classroom setting.…
In my professional career, numbers, spreadsheets, and dollar signs have not inspired me to action, but rather the chance to create experiences through considerate service that people can celebrate. I applied for a position as Consular to achieve a higher degree of professional and personal satisfaction, but more importantly, to serve in greater and nobler capacity.…
