Personal Narrative: Growth In English
Growth in English Throughout the 2016-2017 school year, I have discovered new concepts and increased my skills in english writing and literature. I believe that these works presented best represent the growth I had this year, though I feel like I could write with a higher quality. My writing, reading, and analyzing skills in English have improved throughout this year through multiple essays, annotations, and figurative language assignments. In the writing pieces, my strength is mainly in creative writing and research projects, as I learned from the assignment. Though I have grown, I am convinced that I can still increase my writing quality in the future.
My first piece of writing that shows my growth is the Ship Breaker at the beginning of

The assignment was a packet on multiple pieces of writing, like “Meatpacking”, The Jungle, and Fast Food Nation. This conveys another one of my better piece of writing, and the fact that part of my strength lies in research. The annotations from this assignment taught me new details about the explanations and reasonings behind annotations. It assisted in giving me a satisfactory grade on another piece of writing, which was the Animal Farm Formal Discussion. The discussion was a research where detailed and clearly sites sources and explanations about the topic chosen was needed. I decided to address the issue or history of the catholic church’s control during the middle ages. This led me to research deeper and let me learn of sources and information I had not known about before. The explanations from the previous annotations assignment led me to have more a connected and reasoned explanation, thus giving me a finer writing. Finally, I recognized that another strength in writing of mine was creative writing. The works in that category were superior to my other writings. In both my Childhood Memory Paragraph and Poetry Unit Assignment, I demonstrated creative topics and thoughtful details, which improved my writing score. These writings were one of my best grades from this school year, and I can feel proud about them. Also, I realized my metaphors were a little unsatisfactory from these writings, and some did not compare well. I never realized that my imagination was so vivid before, and trust I will do more of these

In the past a thousand weeks, I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the quarter ends, I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived my fifth quarter but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Somehow, after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into my papers that I wrote in this quarter, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas. With help from an awesome teacher and my partner, I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.…

One day, I was out with my family at a French bakery. As I opened the door, the sweet scent of baked goods entered my nostrils, an old man approached and he said thank you in a strong thick French accent. I asked the old man if he was French and he replied with “oui je suis français”( yes i'm French). I responded with “ Je ne suis pas français mais je peux parle français”( I'm not French but I can speak French) . His brown eyes widened and as his mouth slowly opened with shock, I gave him a small smile. He said he didn't expect to get a response in French and he asked if my parents were French I said no, my mom is from Mexico, so he asked how I knew French, then I explained that I take French in my high school. The old man said “Your French is excellent for you to not be a native speaker and you've developed the accent.”…

Growing up, most of the children I knew would go to church on Sunday’s, visit their grandparents’ house to bake cookies after school, and have milk and cereal for breakfast every morning. But I had never set foot inside of a religious building, couldn’t even speak the same language as my grandmothers, and ate congee with fermented soy beans like it was the most natural thing in the world. My little town where I’d grown up, made friends, and built memories was, to say the least, completely un-diverse.…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…

It’s always on the back of my mind, and resurfaces to my thoughts when I’m in any social setting regarding Spanish—my second language. I am 3/4 Puerto Rican and 1/4 European, though my pigment carried from the European side, as I have the typical blonde hair and blue eyes. My father was born in Puerto Rico and my mother, although being born here, her mother was Czechoslovakian and Polish, my mother’s father was born in Puerto Rico much like my own father. It always boggles me why I don’t look more Spanish due to the more Spanish heritage I contain. When people see me, they only see my pigment—white. They don’t see the Spanish part, supposedly, until I tell them; then they give me a “Right” or “I see it now” as if they’ve known all along.…

Growing up can be challenging even with the ideal surroundings. Your teen years are even more puzzling because you seem to be stuck in between being a child and an adult. Throw in not having a father or mother around and life gets difficult. The year 2001 was a difficult year for my family and the nation. My life growing up wasn’t picture perfect, but in one very long month I learned that kindness from those around will help you endure and survive.…

I have come to the realization that I am limited in most situations but I can learn to just face the obstacle…whatever it may be…and overcome it. Without the willingness to move on, I would not be able to write the way I do. I write about tough events but I shed some light on it because it is necessary to look into the positivity of situations in order to move on. I write about my team and family and how we overcome situations. My writing is a way of release of what I put aside in order to persevere. In the sense of the writing aspect itself…my perseverance pushes me to move past my ‘writer’s block’ in written pieces. It is safe to say that I did not like writing but I have learned to overcome those struggles. It has pushed me to become a better…

My first moment in English 101 was receiving an 82% on my last RD1 that was due on March 30, 2016 as dated. That moment meant so much for me because it showed me that even thought I still have problems in my writing I’m showing professors that I’m learning and understanding throughout class. However, as graduating from High School my biggest problem was always English. As in today I never thought I was ever going to increase in my understanding of English. One of my biggest moments in English 101 was putting word into context and giving it a subtext. When the Definition Essay was assigned I was really confused because I didn’t know what to write. For example, writing a thesis was one my biggest problem as well making sure I didn’t have any…

The time of the year had come. 5th grade had started! It was a new, fresh school year, which meant something very momentous (at least for me) was coming up soon - the student council elections. You see, I was one of the most courteous, bright kids in the fifth grade at the time, and decided to take a chance in the elections. I thought back to the time I was in fourth grade, making a fool of myself by creating a boring speech with maybe a little bit too much vocabulary. I at least tried my best, and even though I may have known a couple of juicy words which some kids may not have known, all that mattered was that I gave it my all. But now, I emerged as a stronger, smarter 5th grade girl who was ready to take on anything. “I need to get my revenge,”…
