Personal Narrative: I Am A Vietnamese Student
I am a Vietnamese student at SFSU. I do not like the bookstore at school because this place is so racist. I have visited many bookstores in the U. S, but there is no place has the most unpleasant staff members like in SFSU’s bookstore.

This semester, I tried to search a book for a major class. I could not find it, and I asked for help. There are tons of staff members just standing around the bookstore doing nothing. When I asked for help, they all said they did not know where the book was even I begged them. Finally, one staff agreed to help me. He asked me the name of the book, and I spoke up. Surprisingly, he laughed at my accent. This happened in front of crowd of students. English is not my native language; therefor, I was trying my best

Saigon, a small city situated in South Vietnam, is where I grew up. It’s not a big city; however, its population has been growing rapidly in the past decade. New immigrants from different part of the country keep coming toward us for higher-paid jobs and modern technologies. Unlike the U.S, Vietnam is not a developed country. We have low standards living condition; some parts of the country even have no electricity; crimes and violations happen frequently because people want to escape from poverty; etc. Growing up in a country consisted of those characteristics, I was taught to be ambitious and to push myself hard enough to reach higher goals. It is the bad condition in my country that harbors my dreams to come to the US and to get access to…

Growing up as a second generation Asian American, courage was a word that I was well versed with. My parents fled Cambodia after spending years in rice fields, fearfully working for the communist party that tore their lives away from them. When the moon rose each night the blood and tears of the broken country were shadowed by the somber preparations for the next day. For my father, the day just begun; no one ever dared to escape before dark. His arrival in a Thailand refugee camp was crucial. As a teacher, he was targeted. The goal was to demolish all evidence of the “old society.” But he was caught. The soldiers tied him to a tree and beat him. Although no matter how many times he was hit, he continued to say his prayers. His continuous…

Throughout every college experience there are two sides to every story. The text made me realize, through vivid examples that I remember learning when I was younger, such as the gods and the giants, something that I have been told since I was young. I dislike being asked “Where are you from?” because I do not consider myself from any specific place. I have moved around several times as a child, which has given me the opportunity to meet different kinds of people each from distinct walks of life. Being faced with the challenge of meeting new people has taught how to come out of my comfort zone at any given moment. The experiences I have had in life has caused me to become an outgoing, hardworking, and very multicultural person.…

In March of 2007, I entered the United States illegally. Prior to this, I had been deported twice. Crossing the border was very dangerous, but I had to do it because in Mexico we are very poor. My father passed away 21 years ago, and my mom was left a widow with 11 children. My oldest brother moved out of the house, so I had to step up and help my mom raise my siblings. Where I’m from, there aren’t many jobs available, only on the fields and the pay wasn’t enough to support us. I didn’t want to cross the border, but I had no other choice. I ask for your forgiveness for breaking the immigration law by crossing the border and living in America illegally.…

Culture is an important and vital component that defines who and what we are as a person. We interface with cultural difference on a daily basis. So what exactly is culture? Good Question! I will attempt to identify my own cultural and explain what cultural means to me. So, lets start by defining the term culture. “Culture is a particular society that has its own beliefs, ways of life, art, etc.”. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2015) My cultural identity consists of several parts. I am most foremost a female that has a variety of racial genetic makeup of African-American, Native American, and European descent. I was raised in a Christian religious household and in a primarily single parent home. I have a sister and a half brother on my father’s…

Personal background starts off small, it changes and grows over time into something big, it grows into an identity. Walking down the hallway at school, seeing someone standing alone, my first instinct is to make conversation, compliment, or even just smile at him or her. This instinct came from someone once telling me an act so small could turn a person's entire life around. As a kid, reading encyclopedias about random topics, consumed my time. Many days were spent coming home to find an injured wild animal in my dad's arms waiting to be saved. My dad would sit outside and draw animals, trees, and anything else he saw. Nothing excited me more than trying to draw whatever my dad drew, and as good as he did. Any assignment that was handed to…

I started playing Belle-Clair when I was four or five years old, after I saw my sister playing, I wanted to get started as quickly as possible. I played with girls that I went to school with. Every practice and game was so entertaining. Being able to play with my friends outside of schools and getting snacks after every game was the best part. Just being able to have fun as a kid was enjoyable as well.…

Coming into my first quarter of college I did not know what to really expect. I was very nervous and thought to myself if I could actually be successful in college. As the quarter went on, yes it was difficult at times, but I managed to work hard and get through everything. I have had good experiences and I have had bad experiences. I have had a mixture of these experiences throughout my classes. Academically I did a relatively good job. Although most of the time I was lazy and watched netflix a lot, towards the end of the quarter I did better on fully completing my work as well as watching less television.…
