My Athletic Life as a Senior Friends were made, teams were created, and working hard was my life. I practiced to reach my full potential and challenged myself to beat my best score. The thrill of the sports I played gave me meaning to work and work. That is why my senior year was full of accomplishments. It all started by joining a first quarter sport, which for me was volleyball. I joined volleyball with the intent of getting a grade for advanced physical education class. I had no plan to join any sport, but the grade was 30 percent off my first semester final grade. Our coaches put a canopy tarp over the net and made us play until the ball died. My coached used to always say “If you are lucky enough you will get hit in the face.” To think they said the exact opposite of what I expected, a joke that was priceless. By the time third quarter came, I jumped into tennis. The season was the most fun, relaxing, and non-stressful time I ever had. Every day was something new; for example I found out that three of my teammates did not know how to jump rope. Also I saw how prized I was to my coach; he was proud and talked about my potential to other gym teachers which made me perform to my fullest. The very people I called teammates did not judge me, hate me, or make me feel little in any way other than joking around. I was “the bomb,” they would say. They praised me for being so good, respected me for helping them out. Thanks to them I became a better teammate, athlete, and fellow friend. I sat with my long time friend Liberty, and talked to her while the athletic department chairman describe hoe the athlete of the year award is earned and what the athlete did to achieve such an award. During the speech I was playing with the envelope that had my certificate and not paying attention to what was happening. I zoned in at the last minute to hear the name of the athlete. As the department chairman finished his speech, he paused then read my name out loud.
As I walked up to accept the award, I yelled out “You guys are going to make me cry,” as tears ran down my face. I was handed the 24 inch trophy. Then I hugged the other athletes who got Rooky of the Year, Scholar Athlete of the Year, and Runner up Athlete of the Year. After taking a group picture we dispersed into the crowd, I hugged others who told me I deserved the award and thanked them. It was a moment I cannot forget. Becoming athlete of the year was my ultimate dream that I thought I would never
