Acting is a part of life
In American Samoa, there is a competition for high school students to perform in different acts within special categories. It is called the Annual Speech Festival. For three years of my high school experience, I have attended all of the speech festival competitions. I have played different roles and acted in other categories such as dual acting, dramatic play, and monologue. Acting is a whole different world for me. I get to express myself and show what I can perform to the audience. The annual speech festival was a total challenge for me last year.
It took a long time to discover my best performance category. I had to perform in front of several people and get their opinions, or suggestions. It was hard though, but fun at the same time. After all, it was just an act in the end. Later on, I had decided to participate in the monologue category. I performed a piece by Mark Mathabane, and it was about the importance of education. I had to bring out the message clearly and face the audience with great sadness, eagerness, and most of all potential. Before the competition, I prayed and worked hard for my part. When the final day came, I gave my best shot and prayed I would take any place: first, second, or third, as long as it’s a place.
In the end I was announced third place for the monologue category. It was such a surprise and a great victory for me. I felt very happy that day. It did not matter to me that I did not get first or second place, because I knew I did my best with all my heart and soul. This achievement taught me a lesson that with great preparation, I am able to succeed in anything plus the power of prayer. This is a method I believe in and use many times.
I truly believe the world is filled with actors. Different sorts of actors, and I am one of them. I did not consider acting as a talent until I had tried it. I had always thought acting was boring, lame, and crazy. But after I had tried it out, I found it very interesting and amazing. I give

I am inspired by those that act because the actors are challenging themselves and playing a role that they had most likely never played before. As the audience, I am absorbed into the characters’ world and how the little mannerisms of each character complete the play as a whole. I am an absolute fanatic for theatrical performances, whether it be a play, musical, or dance. I think that performers have to express themselves effortlessly, unbeknownst to the audience. By experiencing it firsthand through pit orchestra, I was fully able to appreciate how much time was put into the preparation of of a performance. As a student at Wellesley, I will be frequenting the musicals and plays performed by the theater because the fine arts is what fuels my imagination. Also through participating in pit, I learned that many, many hours are put into creating a fantastic, emotion-wrought performance. It is not just the actors that create the atmosphere, it is also the musicians. Along with the actors and possibly the music, there are more people that put the time into making the play “perfect”, something that the audience usually does not know or does not see. For this reason, I am very excited to learn that there is a theater (aka a place to watch plays/musicals/perform as a pit member) because whether I…

The play that my group and I read and presented was Behind Closed Doors, a play with the concept of, Tragedy in your past can affect your present if you do not let go and move on. The role I played was the director, which is a role in the theater, that’s very much so unappreciated. The purpose of the presentation project was to actually understand, hands on, what it takes to produce a Theatre play, and what the jobs and elements are to do so. In theatre, communication is key. Every job works in harmony with one another, and they all need each other to put on an incredible show.…

    Sweeney Todd Stereotypes

My greatest artistic experience is playing the role of Sweeney Todd. It was the hardest role I’ve ever played. I got to play Sweeney Todd at fifteen years old. I was about to finish my freshman year of high school. I don’t believe many other actors get the opportunity to play a role as diverse as Sweeney Todd. The background research I did on the character was incredible. To become a murderer and live what Sweeney went through was extremely difficult. One reason was because I’d never loved someone in that way before. In order for me to gain that emotional experience, I had to put my own mother in the scenario. I also never felt revenge or rage in that kind of way before. My director was able to get that out of me over the month of character…

After reading the first part of Respect for Acting by Uta Hagan I have a newfound respect for actors and all that they go through to obtain the true character in which they are playing. As someone who has never neither acted nor read anything about performing, this has opened my eyes to all of the work that these actors go through on a daily basis for the sheer enjoyment of their audience. While reading over the chapters in this book there are a few key concepts that I found to be interesting.…

    How Opa Changed My Life

I was nerve-wrecked, but I did my best in presenting my project. When the winners were announced, I was eagerly listening with a mildly beating heart. I was very disappointed when my name was not called. I was devastated, as I was an immature child at that time. I started tearing up and began doubting myself. My family and friends tried to console me, but eventually gave up. However, one thing that my teacher had said stuck with me. She said, “Life is too short for you to be doubting yourself; just try again next year and who knows, you might win”; I kept that piece of advice with me wholeheartedly. The following year, when I was in eighth grade, I participated in the science fair again. I put in the same effort, but one thing was different; my perspective. I thought that if I do win, then it will be an accomplishment for me. However, if I did not then it would act as a learning experience. I confidently presented my project to the judges with an open mind and no nerve-wrecking…

On July 11, 2016, I presented a booktalk to a group of ten female teens that are a part of the teen theatre group, the Saax Bradbury Players. The booktalk was hosted by an employee of the theatre, Jen Blalock. Because of rehearsals taking place in the theatre, the booktalk was given in the host’s home. The grades of the students range from rising sophomores to 2016 graduates. The ethnicity of the student group is ninety percent White and ten percent African American. The main interest of this student group is drama. Most of their time is spent in rehearsing and performing in children’s, young adult, and adult theatrical productions. These teens are truly diverse in the groups in which they relate. Their ages…

Success is portrayed differently in each person’s mind. However, to be successful, you have to have the drive to achieve that rank. In my church youth group there was always a music competition between the other churches in the tri-state area. It was my last year in the program, so I decided to enter under advanced percussion. The day I signed up was the day I started to write. The competition was months away, but I wanted to get ahead of the game so I can keep my first place title. By the time the competition came around, I had my whole piece written and hours of practice behind me. That constant drive kept me on my toes for this competition because I wanted to be the first place winner. My drive wouldn’t let me settle for second place due to the fact that I wanted to be…

Being a part of something so exciting and bursting with energy is one of the many things that make me happy, so I’m willing to work as hard as it takes to get me where I know I need to be.…

I found that my grades greatly improved, having achieved a 4.0 GPA for the first time in my life, along with my clarinet skills when my band director elected me to perform my first solo at the spring concert. This summer, I had the opportunity to go to Washington D.C. and New York with the music, speech, and drama kids. In order to go, you had to be in at least four activities related to band or speech. I was involved in band, the play, large group speech, and individual speech. After a long and dreadful sophomore year, I finally made it. I had a fun summer and the twilight of it was the trip, and it was quite satisfying.…
