Personal Narrative: My Essay In College
I graduated high school in 2011 but I started my first ever semester of college in the spring of 2017 at Southeast Missouri State University. I was extremely nervous about being in an English class in college. The writing in college is completely different from writing in high school. Writing has never been my forte but I have managed to learn some new things and relearn some old things. My first writing assignment was a literacy narrative. I had no knowledge of this topic. Once the professor explained to the class what a literacy narrative was, I started to think about what I could possible write about. This was my first writing assignment in six to seven years, therefore I was immensely concerned regarding how it would turn out. I procrastinated …show more content…
This was definitely the most challenging to me. Our professor did a good job describing a discourse community. He addressed examples of discourse communities. This, unequivocally, helped a great deal. I thought I would be more prepared this time around, but I was wrong. I learned to never speak directly to the reader. In life, we generally don’t think about discourse communities being around us, but they are. Literature gives a new perspective on life. The next essay seemed to be, in a way, easier. It was an informative essay. I wrote about a disorder, that a friend has, that is not much talked about. In this writing assignment, we had to list at least one source. This was unfamiliar to me, along with the MLA format. The Professor was able to show us where in our textbook, MLA format was discussed. Further, I became familiar with the MLA format. I mistakenly learned that the Work(s) Cited page is supposed to be in alphabetical order. By mistakenly, I mean, mistakenly. Somehow, I managed to type my sources in alphabetical order without being aware of it. When the professor handed back our essays, he explained to the class that the sources were meant to be in alphabetical order. That mistake of mine, was a pleasant

At the beginning of the course we wrote a personal profile, where we introduced ourselves to our classmates and instructor, in it we included some things like the place where we were raised, important influences in our lives, and our dream job. As well, we introduced a topic that we would be interested in structuring and writing an argumentative paper about, I chose the Dakota access pipeline. It was a controversial topic throughout the world and it drew my interest to intellectually challenge the opposing side, along with several other popular debate topics. Unfortunately, I procrastinated throughout the entire course, because writing has never been my strongest suite. I did that because I over thought every single assignment because I was never certain if I was on the right track. Afterwards, we did a “Says Does Analysis” assignment, we had the opportunity to choose an article from the New York Times editorial. We had to determine what the author was trying to do and say, when writing his or her article. Doing this assignment, helped me evaluate my writing more in-depth, and expand upon what I was discussing.…

Freshman Composition has done so much for me academically. In previous years I have had to do little to no writing and even when we did there were no rules or writing process we had to follow. This class has built a great basis for me, towards my academic future. I do realize that I am far away from being even an average writer, but I enjoy and accept that challenge to myself on becoming a competent writer. Parts of my writing, that still need to work are my introductions and sentence fluency. While I believe that my strong suits are, that once I get past my obstacles of writing that I have the potential to write something that will make a difference, other than that all my skills are still very raw. I’ve learned many things during EN101, the…

Throughout my time is College Composition I, I learned and developed numerous skills that I will carry with me to college and beyond. While writing the five assigned essays, I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses. I believe a strength of mine was my ability to add in personal stories into my essays. For example, in my definition essay, I included my fear of disappointment and how I work to overcome this particular fear. On the other hand, one weakness that I struggled with was style. While writing my essays, I would sometimes use wordy and unclear sentences structures. Often times I would focus solely on improving my diction while writing my papers.…

In high school, I always considered myself a good student. I payed attention in class, took notes, and genuinely took interest in my education. As a college student, I have tried to do the same thing. Of course, college is not quite the same as high school, and I have not always gotten the near-perfect results I used to expect. While I am working on my perfectionism as a separate issue, I am glad to take this opportunity to learn more about how to succeed in college. Three strategies I learned in this chapter include how to better prepare before class, how to review after class, and how to improve my note-taking strategies.…

After enrolling in the Dual Credit English Composition 1 class, I was afraid of many aspects of the course. I was petrified of meaningless things: deadlines, word counts, and plagiarism. Although each of those aspects are important to consider and be mindful of, they are, in no way, anything to worry over. I lost confidence in myself and my writing, through my own frightening thoughts. Almost a full semester into the class, I know now that through hard work and careful, in depth writing that I can accomplish anything that I put my mind to. I learned that my silly fears were restraining me from accomplishing great things. I was able to overcome many obstacles pertaining to my writing, while in this class. One major obstacle that I was able to overcome and improve myself greatly on was transitioning; I ask myself, “How was I able to improve my transitioning skills in just one semester?” but the answer is quite clear: practice.…

the assignment was to write a second person point of view informative on how to become any occupation of our choice (Naturally I chose the occupation astronaut, a occupation I knew practically nothing on beyond what I could pick up from Sandra Bullock and George Clooney). The essay was difficult to write, it challenged the entirety of my knowledge of grammar. I persevered and wrote a great paper I was proud of. In that class I learned more than how to better my writing but how to appreciate writing and the power it has. It was that class that made me realize the pen truly is mightier than the sword, as lame as that sounds.…

As the first semester of freshmen year comes to a close, we as an English 100 class have written about many different topics throughout the course. We started with an introductory paper about ourselves, followed by a paper that we shared what life lessons we wanted to pass down to our children, next came a description essay where we went into as much detail as we possibly could on one or two photos we found, second to last was a persuasive paper, and our final paper was all about any country we chose. As we went from paper to paper my writing only improved as I learned new skills and better ways to write.…

Talking about my experience in this assignment, I faced many things, some are interesting and others are difficult to deal with. For example, for this essay, it seems a new experience for me to write about poetry explication. I took me a while to first read the poem like three or four times until I had an idea about what the poem means. One of the things that helped me understand the poem is by trying to live the experience that the poet had experienced. On the other hand, although this paper is short, only 2-3 pages, but it can be difficult. We actually were given a fair amount of time to finish it perfectly. Lastly, the paper was not that hard to write in general, and it was a first start for me to write…

I think sometimes when it comes to identify a particular essay or a paper that we wrote in previous assignments we will most of time find that they all had their own obstacles and difficulty’s in the process of writing them. It seems that when we finish with an assignment we think that that might have been the hardest paper we had to write about, but then comes other challenge or a paper and then we think that the old one was easy and doable. For example this semester we had to deal with these types of essays that had their challenges: Brief Literacy narrative, Commentary, Dual perspectives research, and the researched argument paper. The most essay or assignment that I had the most difficulty with is the commentary essay. Since it was commentary and I could write about the topic that I wanted and not having to do any Reacher on it, I felt comfortable and was not focused on the important steps of the writing process like; the organizing, formatting, run-ons, the word choice and so on. I had trouble with punctuation, the commas going inside the quotes in the MLA formatting, and couple of run-ons here and there, and last…

At the beginning of the semester when the reading responses were assigned, I really did not know what to expect or how to do any of them. As the semester went on, I slowly figured out how to improve my work on these reading responses. Some of the responses were pointless I thought but others were helpful. No matter how many reading response assignments we had on quotes and citations, I never one hundred percent understood how to do them until I kept on putting them into my work as the semester went on. Those assignments helped me gain a better understanding on how to use quotes and when to use them. This will come handy in classes in the future.…
