Personal Narrative: My Work In Casino Cage Operations
I currently work for one of MGM Resorts International’s properties in Las Vegas, Nevada. The department that I work in is Casino Cage Operations. The Casino Cage is part of the Finance and Casino Operation department. The type of group that I work for is a primary work team. It is a team/group that I was assigned to work in when I started working for my organization. Our team consist of 68 people in which most of us are entry level employees. Moreover, our team is made up of a diverse group of people with different types of work experience, ages, nationalities, and people who speak different languages. These roles explain the behaviors that people exhibit in groups/teams. On the casino Cage the assistant shift supervisors exhibit the behaviors that are associated with tasks roles and maintenance role which are roles that help accomplish goals and offer social support. The supervisors communicate the organizations goals through pre-shift that is conducted each shift. They also offer social support through assisting employees with guest transactions. We all as members of the group exhibit self-centered roles. I think that this is normal because people individual goals my not always be aligned with the organizations goals. Even though, sometimes groups working together can be non-productive or counter-productive. However, there are step that people can take to resolve this issue and promote group members satisfaction and team performances. The stages in group performance are Forming, Storming, Norming, and Transforming. Forming is when a group is created, defines an initial purposes, develop a membership, and procedures are arranged. Storming is the second stage where control, leadership, and some emotional struggles happens. This may include some rebellion and can lead to a team prematurely ending. Norming is the third stage in which the team works through any conflicts in the storming stage. At this stage effective behavioral rules and group roles are established. The next stage is performing which involves getting the work done and producing useful output. The last stage is transforming at which time the team will end their project successfully or transform into another form. My team completes all of these stages on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis such as implementing the new fee base parking plan, the profit growth plan, and online

    The features of effective team performance are set out in Brian Tuckman’s phases of team development theory, ‘Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing.’ This outlines the phases that a team will go through in order to become effective and reach maturity.     According to Bruce Wayne Tucker , the developer of the Tucker Stages, there are (5) stages of group development. The first stage is called Forming. Forming is when members of a newly formed group meets for the first time to collaborate on a project. This occasion gives each member a chance to introduce themselves and express to the other members what they plan to contribute to the project. This may also be the time when certain roles are delegated to certain members ; such as leader/facilitator, recorder, information surfer, and so on. The second stage is storming. During the storming stage, group members are basically competing to have their ideas heard or recognized. This can sometimes cause conflict within the group, in which case, the group leader is needed. The role of the group leader or facilitator is important during this stage for it is the leader who help to control and resolve disagreements and to help restore and maintain group moral. The third stage is norming. When there is no longer conflict and group members respect one another’s opinions and are working together as a team, this is called norming. The fourth stage, performing , is when the group is now working together harmoniously as a team. Members are focused on reaching the goal and are trusting and relying on each other. Each member is working independently and is able to solve intragroup disagreements without the aid of the group leader or facilitator. The group is successful at this stage. It is important to note however, that certain situations can arise and set a group back a stage or maybe even two. For example, a new member with opposing ideas can set a group that’s at stage four, the performing stage, back to stage two , the storming stage. The last stage is the adjourning stage. This is when the project is complete and the members of the group are moving on to other projects, Hopefully the project was a success.
