Personal Narrative-Partners In Tennis
Partners in Tennis In 2020, I was at a summer retreat before the big tennis tournament. The Junior Female Tennis Tournament of South Dakota to be exact. I was with one of my close friends, Janis. Janis was in one of the other cabins, so I was basically on my own. I had five other people in my cabin. There was Tina, Harmony, Alana, Flora, and Camila. We all were great friends from the start because we all were so diverse. It was sad because we all went to the same school but never talked. Tina had red and yellow coiled hair and sapphire eyes. She was one of the spoiled rich kids whose parents forced her to play tennis. Harmony had blackish-blue hair and honey eyes, and she was the most kind hearted, sincere person you could ever meet in your life. …show more content…
I’m hungry though so could you go with me?” (something isn't right about this) she begs me.
“Fine, (you’ll) owe me a bag of sour gummy worms,” I sigh while I reach for my slippers. Alana and I sneak into the cafeteria that was fortunately next to our cabin. We walked inside and found some Oreos and milk for Alana.
“I bet you’re wondering why I wasn’t sound asleep as usual,” she tells me (as) she grabs a glass to put the milk in.
“I really am wondering (not good grammar) because every time we do activities, you always give the counselor a reason to go back to the cabin and start sleeping. You are exactly like a hibernating bear,” I tell her laughing.
“At least I don’t snore like a bear unlike you,” Alana joins me at the table laughing.
“Okay, that’s fair,” I say giggling. Alana and I stay in the cafeteria for about fifteen minutes. We make jokes, talk about how my role model is Serena Williams and her role model is her father, and we both wonder what’s going to happen when we get back to school. No one caught us that night, because I don’t think any adults would think any ten-year-old girl would be awake at 3 a.m. That night, Alana and I became partners in crime, until we faded away in junior

Octavia was my best friend, or you could say, one of my only friends. She sat down next to me and sighed. “I really think that this time I failed my math test, Em…” she said sadly. I looked at Octavia and said sternly, “Octavia, for the last time you didn’t fail your math test, or any other test for that matter. You’re the smartest person in our grade, probably even the school. Don’t be so hard on yourself.” “I know, I know… but I can’t help but stress out.” She replied, pushing her rimmed black glasses up her nose. We sat in silence for about ten minutes, watching the practice. I observed the player’s agility and strength. They mesmerized me, how every play was set up in the same way and the rhythm at how the players seemed to practice. I was surprised that I hadn’t realized this before. My eyes were trained on one player. I squinted, trying to recognize him. At the end of the practice, when all the players took off their helmets, he looked unfamiliar. Huh. I thought. I know, or know of almost everyone in this grade. How come I don’t recognize him? Suddenly hit with a strange urge to get to know him better, an idea popped into my head. “Hey, Octavia,” I said, “how about we go to the game tonight?” Octavia stared at me in shock; I had never expressed an interest in any social events, much less football games. “Yeah, it’ll be fun!” I said excitedly. “Okay… if you say so Em…” Octavia said, unsure. Octavia wasn’t the biggest fan of the games either, and, aside from the fact that our other best friend played football, knew about as much about it as I did. Jake called up to us, “Hey guys! Are you ready?” “Yep!” we shouted back. Octavia and I made our way down the bleachers to meet Jake at the big yellow thing that was shaped like a “Y” at the end of the field. “Ready?” Jake asked again, once we were beside him. We drove home, all of us tired after a long day filled with learning.…

A week later I had returned to school, and it was like walking into a brand new atmosphere. Dirty looks were replaced by smiles and sneers exchanged with hellos. I had even gotten an invitation from Keri Mahan to sit with her and her friends in the lunchroom—which I accepted with a bit of caution. But after I had sat down with them, I quickly realized that none of them had seemed to remember the past all too well or how they’d treated me. They just accepted me as the new girl from Alabama, and that was fine by me.…
