Personal Narrative: Vacation In The Dominican Republic
According to stress.about.com, “A good vacation can help us to reconnect with ourselves, operating as a vehicle for self-discovery and helping us get back to feeling our best.” Getting away is proven to relieve stress. From personal experience, I can vouch for this fact because going on vacation helps relieve my stress. I go on vacation and sit on the beach at least once a year. I prefer going to a tropical place such as Mexico. This year I will be going to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. I use my fives senses everywhere I go. I use them the most while laying in the beach.

I am laying on a peaceful beach in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. To my left, I can see the palm trees. They are very tall and not making any movement due to the lack of wind. Sometimes, it’s nice to have a little bit of a breeze so you don’t feel as if you are sticking to your chair from the sweat dripping off your body. Throughout the day the sun shifts and as it does the palm tree casts a shade over my friend and I, laying on our chairs. I can hear the children restlessly climbing the tree, trying to be the first one to the top. I watch them carefully, hoping

As the children are playing water polo they are attempting to dodge the massive waves coming to the shore. The sound of the waves is so relaxing however, knowing there are young children near the powerful waves makes me nervous and on the lookout for one of them not returning above the waves. I understand the fun in dodging the waves because that was something I lived for as a child but it can be very dangerous. The touch of the soft, white sand on my feet is a feeling I will never forget. Personally, I think it is better than the feeling of soft carpet on your feet. The smell of the ocean's salt water is not one of my favorites but I adapt to it after sitting on the beach for so long. I just sit there and take in all the beautiful scene around

In Leif Jensen’s article, “Ethnic Identities, Language, and Economic Outcomes among Dominicans in a New Destination,” Jensen observes Dominican immigrants, who migrated to Reading, Pennsylvania from the Dominican Republic, and how they identify themselves in America. He and his fellow researchers start their observations by giving some of the Dominicans, in Reading, surveys about their homes, health, stress, migration history, and other things. They find that 7.6 percent of Reading’s population is Hispanic, which is double Harrisburg’s percentage (Harrisburg is the community with the next closest percentage of Hispanics). They also used open-ended questions concerning race to give the respondents the opportunity to indicate how they classify…

Living back in the Dominican Republic I used to have a very easy life. Then I was living in my grandparents’ house in the suburb; where everything was very repeatedly: Wake up, eat, go to school, go back home, eat, do homework, play, eat once again and go back to sleep. Weekends were my favorites though; every Sunday we would go out for lunch, which usually I would be the one to pick, and as an usual seven-eight years old child my favorite thing back then was Pizza.…

Traveling to Haiti came with many challenges: distance, language, and diseases. I was certain I would have trouble communicating with the people I encountered and that I would have to sit still for a nine hour car ride, but I didn’t think I would get sick. Before the trip, for precaution I had to take some medications. The instructions were drink the pill everyday, only consume bottled water, and always wash your hands. I did everything I was told, but still got sick. Though I felt horrible, I was determined to work hard and fulfill my responsibilities. Setting aside my discomfort required determination, commitment, and love for the people around me. I was able to do everything I had set my mind to and once I got back home I went to the hospital.…

For the first and last few days of my trip to Haiti, I will be staying with a house family in Delmas 83. Their house is roughly a twenty minute drive from the Port-au-Prince International Airport and around a forty minute drive from the orphanage I will be volunteering at. There are many museums, markets, craft villages, art galleries, restaurants, and shops local to the areas that I plan on staying in throughout my trip. There, I can meet and talk with individuals native to Haiti.…

It was December 2010 and my family and I were planning to go on a trip to Mexico in December for Christmas break because me and my siblings were out of school. We were packed our clothes and ready to leave. We were waiting for my uncle to come to our house so we could go and get ready to leave. We left Houston around 8pm, and my uncle drove the Nissan Frontier truck and we went straight to 59 south towards Victoria. When we got Laredo around 12 am, we took a break at a corner store to put some gas in the car and buy something to eat, then we were ready to go. It was a long trip, I had needed to stretch my legs out. After we got our snacks, we left the corner store, and we headed straight to the border line. I…

On a cloudy Friday, at around 15:45 in the afternoon, me and Alexandra Theodorou headed to our field trip in Punta Culebra, located at the Causeway in Panama City. Very excited to find out what was expecting us in Punta Culebra, the first impression I got from that place was the nicest one. A very gentle guy attended us and told us that any doubts we had he could answer them and to not think twice before asking him for a favor. As I had never been there before, the first thing I asked him was that if he could please tell me where we could find the turtles, the small room with glass aquariums and the amphibian’s exhibition. He indicated us where were does three places located and then we headed that way. Punta Culebra was pretty empty on that…

    a day at the beach

The day was warm and muggy; it was the perfect weather to go to the beach. The water was clear and a rich deep blue in color. Not a patch of seaweed in sight. The fine white sand is burning your feet as you hear the sound of the waves crashing and the cool sea breeze brushing by. I take a deep breath of fresh air and look at the surrounding of people soaking in the sun waiting to get in the water. I slapped on the sunscreen and packed up my gear and ran towards the water, little kids were building sandcastles and having sand fights. I dogged through them and at last I was running through the shallows of the water getting nearer to the in coming wave. I dove straight through the dumping wave, the cool water rushing down my body. I popped back up to the surface, relived that I was finally out of the warm weather and cooled off by the beautiful seawater.…

    The Beach

Just imagine a soothing, peaceful, majestic strip of sand and pebbles where land meets the sea and sea meets land. This amazingly gorgeous, serene piece of earth, commonly known as the beach, is my happy place. I stumbled upon this fortunate stroke of serendipity in my early childhood and it appalls me that at some point in history this astonishing creation didn’t exist. Since I’m rambling and your reading I guess I can tell you about my first visit to the beach. Although I was a child I can vividly remember this vacation, being that it was my first trip to my happy place. This life changing vacation started with a long, boring, and tiresome drive from Jackson, MS to Myrtle Beach, SC. From listening to the terrible music my dad played, the annoying screech of my mother’s complaining, and the irritating click click click of sister’s phone my head was about to explode. Finally we are here! As I got out of the car I couldn’t help but marvel at picturesque shore lined with blue velvet waves tranquilly flowing onto the sandy coastline. “Ouch” I quickly yelped, maybe I shouldn’t have gotten out the car on the blazing hot cracked pavement without shoes on. Besides this minor onset of pain I was already having the time of life. I joyfully sprinted from the car feeling the warm minute grains of sand between my toes as I met the coastline. The sea gulls roared above my head as sweet sweet smell of barbeque consumed the air. All of a sudden the semi-enticing smell of salt water and seaweed quickly filled my nose as I submerged myself in water. Roaring in my ear were the vibrations of the water from swimmers nearby and fish fleeing my general area. I tossed dunked swam and jumped until my limbs grew weary and it was time to depart from my happy place. I felt that for once in my life I was truly at peace with myself and I have found true happiness in my heart. Surprisingly this was only a day at the…

Sitting there and enjoying the solitude I have, I closed my eyes and I started to hear the soothing sound of the waves brushing against the rocks. I felt the rays of the sun starting to warm up my face and arms, as sweat slowly starts to trickle down my skin. There was a slight breeze that kept brushing strands of my hair right onto my face, but I did not mind at all because that breeze felt so cooling on my warmed up skin. Along with the breeze came tiny bits of salty sand flying all over the place, as I move the hair out of my face I get some sand in my mouth and taste the mixture of the grains and the salt, but it does not bother me. In the distance I can hear the sound of people talking, laughing, and dancing to a local band playing reggae music at one of the nearby resorts. Everything seems so serene.…
