Personal Statement: A Career As A Speech Pathologist
Life is a crazy, terrible, wonderful adventure. Every new day brings so many opportunities and choices to every individual. Sometimes the choices we make can lead to something wonderful and sometimes the choices we make give us a lot of pain. We can try to map out a plan on what we want to accomplish in life but overall it's left up to chance. In this essay I will be talking about my personal, educational, and professional goals. My mother has always strived her hardest to give me all the opportunities life has to offer. A single mom with an alcoholic unreliable husband, she protected me from growing up too fast by divorcing him. Not only did she take excellent care of me, but she also took excellent care of herself. She finished her degree on teaching, got us a wonderful place to live, secured a job and a place for me to learn in a private school in Florida, and always exercised/eat healthy. I have always adored working with children. As a teenager on my days off my mother, who was a elementary school teacher would let me come and help her out with her classroom activities. This is what started my love for working with children. In my junior year summer, I attended a 3 week college credit session on Psychology in California at the University of Westmont. I learned specifics on how the brain and body work together which fascinated me even more. Finally, what secured my decision on becoming a speech pathologist was getting a job my senior year of highschool at an after school program at Winterset Elementary. Not only did I get to work with kids but I also met someone from the University of Northern Iowa who was studying to become a speech pathologist. I had never heard of this profession before but it sparked my interest. After learning more and more about the job, I knew it's what I wanted to work
