When students have to get up early it affects their physical needs. First, the amount of sleep teens get affects their melatonin levels. For example, a problem for many teens is that their melatonin levels rise later at night than in most children and adults, causing them to go to bed-- and want to get up-- at later times. (Source 2) Since, many teens do not feel sleepy until late at night, school should be started later. Second, teens are not getting the amount of sleep they need. For instance, teens need 10 to 12 hours of sleep but they are getting far less than that.(Source 2) Since teens don’t get sleepy until about 11:00, they get less sleep because of their early school start time. However, schools ending times could be a benefit to how alert students are while driving. First, many parents would rather their teens to drive home later in the day rather than early in the morning when they are sleepy. For example, on a daily basis many students are still sleepy when they drive themselves to school, if school starts later than the students will be more alert and able to drive safer, resulting in fewer teen accidents on the road. (Source 4) Since schools would start later, less accidents involving teens would happen. Also, not getting enough sleep and having to wake up early for school is a physical and health issue for the teen bodies. For instance, it is difficult for most students to fall asleep before 11:00.
