Before the technology was like it is now the Greeks hated it. 2,000 years ago the Greek philosopher Socrates complained about the technology. He wasn't talking about the stuff we have today, but actually writing. He believed writing would create forgetfulness in the learners.

The internet links our lives together. Without the internet how would we do research. Say if you needed a library book, but it wasn't at your library, you could use the internet. We learn things quicker by having these devices.Back then it would take longer to find information now it's just a click away.

The article called Does the Internet Make You Dumber by Nicholas Carr states that, “The Internet grants us easy access to unprecedented amounts of information. Growing body of scientific evidence suggest that the Net, with its constant distractions and interruptions, is also turning us into scattered and superficial thinkers” (1). Carr states in his article that the Internet affects people in a negative way, messing with their attention and memory. Carr also states how focused you are affects your personality, your memory, and your thoughts. One of the studies Carr looked at was conducted by a neuroscientist named Michael Merzenich. He said, “He was profoundly worried about the cognitive consequences of the constant distraction and interruptions the Internet bombards us with” (2).…

One reason why our school should participate in the national “Shut Down Your Screen Week” is because it could prevent students from being distracted. Instead of students worrying about their devices, they would concentrate more on their education. In the article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid,” under the sub headed, “YES,” it states that “If we’re distracted, we understand less, remember less, and learn less.” This shows that students understand less content that the teachers are teaching, resulting in a higher chance of failing. In order to prevent this from occurring, our school should participate in the national “Shut Down Your…

Technology is often used to find out information. It is a faster, quicker and easier way to get answers from Websites. Mohsenzadega refers to this (448), “….with just the click of a button on our handy-dandy little gadgets.” Everything is there, with no need to struggle or go out to get things done. Some people do not need the doctor for check-ups. They can get the information from Medline.com which allows people to self-diagnose (448). Computers help us stay up to date with everything, whether it is the weather, or a family member that lives far. It is cheaper to communicate now over Facebook, Twitter, Facetime or Oovoo because it’s free, instead of buying a phone card every time they need to keep in contact with a relative. It has also brought people together from all over the world. They meet new people find out about them and most of the time fall in love and end up together. The internet is very useful and good. Some people feel better behind screens and are able to express themselves better and open up more to people, when they are not face to face. People get to know them better on the internet and get a lot of information from there. Just the simple fact of entertainment, of having memories with…

I am not in favor of screen free week because many studies have shown that children do well in school when using technology. Such as in; ‘iPad a solid education tool, study reports’; “In a partnership with Apple, textbook publishers Houghton Mifflin Harcourt performed a pilot study using an iPad text for Algebra 1 courses, and found that 20% more students (78% compared to 59%) scored 'Proficient' or 'Advanced' in subject comprehension when using tablets rather than paper textbook counterparts.” This implies more students did better on a test when using technology rather than a textbook. Reports have shown many students do better when they are using a computer for schoolwork.…

Did you know that more than half of the world’s students are using tablet computers? To all the students out there who are not lucky enough to even use a computer (at home or at school), I am deeply sorry for you since half of the people that are at the same age as you are surrounded by information, and are improving their knowledge of the world everyday. No worries! After this speech you will have all the rights to go against who ever would not let your school have laptops/computers. "How is it possible to convince my headmaster to let us have computers in school?” A Chinese proverb once said: “Do not confine your children to your own learning, for they were born in a different time.” It clearly states how the minds of the elders and the juniors are so different since they were born in different times or even centuries. Would you rather listen to a person who has a mind to create more possibilities and not stick to the old rules or a person who sticks any same old rules that their elders once told them and rule the school? I bet you most people would choose a person who creates more possibilities than an old man who sticks to the rules and not let the school have technology. I mean, what is the point of a school, which only has books and pencils, and never interact with visual presentations; it would make the students lives in to hell! When they grow up, what job would require them to only write in books and pencils? If your child does not know anything about technology, what can they even be when they grow up? Nothing is my answer to that. You might say an architect, but sadly, they do use computers too, since after they finish the planning and design of the building, they would have to scan it on a computer and send it out to the managers. Our lives depend on technology and computers. Kids in school used to write on paper and read out of books But the fact is, more and more kids in school…

People want to be productive for what they do in their limited time. So it is quite easy to see people try multitasking. For instance, you might have seen some people who are reading a book while they are walking on a treadmill at a gym. You might have wanted to listen to music when you are driving and also might have also wanted to check your cell phone messages. All these can be examples of multitasking. Gingerich and Lineweaver (2013) conducted two experiments in class by using randomly assigned two groups of participants. The first group was required to send a text message that was a prescribed conversation during a brief lecture while the other group was refrained from texting during the same lecture. Post-lecture quiz was conducted and the scores of texting group were low in the both experiments. This outcome clearly showed the detrimental effects of texting during class, which could discourage multitasking behavior as wider extent. In another research, Strayer and Johnston (2001) conducted dual-task to assess the effects of cellular-phone conversation on performance of a simulated driving task. While listening to radio broadcasts or listening to a book on tape did not disrupt the…

There are several positive and negative impacts of the Internet on education. For rural areas especially, the access to information that the Internet offers is an incredible positive force, allowing almost anyone to find the answers to basic questions simply and easily. It helps education in that when someone is curious about something (and therefore open to learning), they can find out some information to feed that "learning hunger" immediately. If you are curious about the ants in the backyard, or want to know more about dinosaurs or mythology... there is a wealth of information at your fingertips and you can enhance your knowledge.…

In my personal opinion, the internet is an invaluable source. For myself it is definitely not a waste of time! I believe that it has many advantages but then again it also had a few disadvantages. I find it extremely helpful for research, social networking and even aids in my school work. If the internet was unavailable I would have to spend more time researching in the library which would result in less time on school work. Statistics show that around a third of the world’s population make use of the internet. The advantages are great – it is quick, efficient and communication worldwide is made easy; Also, users may find this hard to believe that many trees are saved as a result of using less paper as everything can be safely stored on the computer’s hard drive. Could you live without the internet?…
