Inherent Vice - Well I’m a bit nervous right now after Pete Hammond said he has heard mixed things from critics on Inherent Vice. I just took it out of my Best Picture predictions today. I heard that of a trusted critic who saw it, said they adored it but it’ll get very negative responses from other because of how insane is. I mean this excites in one aspect, but absolutely terrifies me because I want a PTA comeback with the Academy.

Selma - Guys, I didn’t know Ava DuVernay was invited to the Director’s branch of the Academy until recently so that aspect quite excites me. I’m going to pull a mini-Anne Thompson though. I’m not sold yet. She seems to have made a pretty well regarded independent film a lot of Awardswatch members are big fans of, but she still has had no mainstream success…. and after I hear Lee Daniels almost directed this script I can’t get the image that is a potential mess in regards. I still haven’t seen her work, and I’m probably wrong… I’m just going to wait for a trailer because I don’t feel like predicting while not confident. If Paramount didn’t already have Interstellar, I’d probably give in already. I know they can absolutely get two contenders in, but at the same time it gives me a barrier to lay down on predicting Selma right now because I don’t think they’re doomed without it. I’m so very close to predicting it for a lot, and believe me I’ll join the ranks of Richard…. I’m just going to wait until I see a trailer.

Rosewater - Jon Stewart is a first time filmmaker taking the risk of going to Telluride without so much as a trailer. No one knows what to expect after he filmed this during a hiatus from the daily show, but for him to choose to premiere it at the Oscar friendly Telluride first really entices me of the potential here. Open Road Films is a rather new distribution company, but they really have two rather hot items right now. Nightcrawler which early word is a real winner and potential screenplay contender & now Rosewater is

Upon arrival to the principal’s office for disciplinary actions, one of the girls admitted to smoking, while the other (whose initials are T.L.O.) denied any wrongdoing. The principal ended up searching the girl’s purse which contained evidence to prove she was smoking in the bathroom along with marijuana paraphernalia. She eventually admitted to using this paraphernalia for selling marijuana in school. Using the evidence found within the purse and the confession, she was charged and taken into juvenile court where she was eventually sentenced to a year’s probation. T.L.O argued that her 4th amendment rights had been violated…

I have an odd relationship with this film, it entertained me from start to finish, and at no point did it drag or feel grueling. Some might chock that up to good pacing, but I’d chock it up to lots and lots of brainless and inconsequential explosions. Let me be honest with you for a second, I secretly enjoy a lot of films because I know they’re bad, but that doesn’t make them any less enjoyable. This film is going to fit nicely into that collection of films I liked more than my brain tells me I should have. A lot of people are going to…

Final thoughts, I'm not sure why I so greatly prefer this film over the original and often I feel like I'm the only one that does. Tony Todd's incredibly memorable performance has stuck with me for years and is part of what I most readily associate with the franchise. Just all aspect of this film is top-notch for me and I feel it's one of the strongest films to be part of the Dead series.…

The podcast Cruel and Unusual covers the issue of the death penalty and whether or not it should be allowed in the U.S. It discusses the controversy within this issue, especially the lethal injection and the constitutionality of capital punishment in regards to the ban of cruel and unusual punishment in the 8th amendment. Some of the cases mentioned were Wilkerson v Utah where the Supreme Court initially ruled to allow a firing squad to be used in the death penalty and Baze v Rees (2008) in which the Supreme Court ruled that lethal injection was not cruel and unusual punishment, and therefore not unconstitutional. The impact that the issue of the death penalty and the court cases regarding it have on the country is that people are easily outraged…

Selma was a movie released in America in the year 2014. English was the language used because it connected with American history. This movie was admired by many viewers because of its rich details about the struggles African American’s faced during the1960s’. The movie was directed by the very accomplished Ava DuVernay. She is an African American director, film marketer, film distributor, and screenwriter. The film industry is dominated by Caucasian men. It took a lot of fearlessness, on DuVernay’s part, to follow her dream career, considering all of the barriers she had to break down. Her work in Selma granted her to be the first black woman director to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award. Her involvement in Selma also got DuVernay nominated…

And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.- Rainer Maria RilkeI remember one of my graduate psychology professors once told me to avoid labels and conclusions. He said rather than look for a diagnosis, spend time gathering information. And never believe you know enough because you will never know enough. You see, to truly know a person, we must see as much of them as we can. Of course, the same goes for ourselves. But because we live in a world that favors quick solutions and tidy conclusions, this can…

The inSocial Work Podcast for this week main focus was about soldiers who get deployed and the effect it has on them and their families. Implications for treatment would be counseling and speaking with them to help them to get back into their life from deployment. One of the things that stood out to me is that it was said that the country needs to do more for their veterans then just put a stick on their car. Education is the key and it is said in the podcast. I do think it is important to learn more about active soldiers and veterans so that we can better serve them. It is better for a social worker to know more about what the family is going through to better help them get through military life better. It is important to know what the families…

Podcasts and webcasts are easy ways to present and distribute information to listeners all around the globe. However there are several drawbacks to this form of media. The drawbacks can be divided into two sections. The first section can be directed towards the process of recording and producing the webcasts. In order to record a webcast you must have: recording equipment, a quiet room, and time. The second section is focused on the persons listening to the webcast. The webcast is strictly auditory and must be accessed on some media device. This can become a problem because some listeners need more than just audio they need other forms of material to help them retain the information. Also because webcasts must be viewed through a mp3 player or computer this can cause a distraction because of the temptation of using the device for something else.…
