Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS

Ang pagmamahal ko sayo ay parang assignment na kinopya…
Bakit?
Kasi di ko maexplain.
With this statement, the conversation begins. It is actually called pick-up line. In pick up lines the speaker makes an introductory statement and the listener responds with “why” or “bakit” (Filipino) as mentioned in the above sample. Then the speaker attempts to express humor or whatever purpose by diverting to a different meaning of the term, phrase, or thought used in the initial statement.
As defined in Wikipedia, it is a conversation opener with the intent of engaging an unfamiliar person for romance, or dating. Overt and sometimes humorous displays of romantic interest, pick-up lines advertise the wit of their speakers to their target listeners. Pick-up lines range from straightforward conversation openers such as introducing or providing information about oneself, or asking someone about their likes to elaborate attempts including humor. In some side of the country, Pick-up line is done using our dialect “waray-waray” or Leyte-Samarnon. It is often used in a game between two persons exchanging pick-up lines. There is even a way to stop a person who’s trying to break a pick-up line by responding “estoryahe” after the initial statement (although it works too even after the follow-up line). Pick-up Lines are now trending, it is popular in television, media and text messaging which means it becomes popular culture in local term or colloquial words, it is named as “banat lines” which is popularized by Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago who also popularized pick up lines during the Reproductive Health Bill Forum in UP-Diliman in September 2011; in addition to that, pick up lines gained popularity in the Philippines when Star Cinema filmed “My Amnesia Girl”, a movie starring Filipino artists John Lloyd Cruz and Toni Gonzaga, used corny but sweet pick-up lines, that became as published bestselling Filipino movie of 2010 (Pick-up

In “Bros Before Hos”: The Guy Code, Michael Kimmel discusses the ways that today’s society expects guys (males between the ages of 16 and 26) to behave. He spends a lot of time on “Guy Code,” a list of values that all men are supposed to have that have been summarized by Robert Brannon, a social psychologist of the 1970s. The first rule is “No Sissy Stuff,” meaning that guys shouldn’t show their feelings, and if they do it is considered a sign of weakness. The second is “Be a Big Wheel,” an idea that masculinity is measured by wealth and power. The third, “Be a Sturdy Oak,” says that guys should be reliable in times of crisis. And the last, “Give ‘em Hell,” implies that men should always take risks and show aggression.…

In his essay “ Hook-up Culture,” Jack Grimes tries to figure out why the generation of people right now are more interested in hook-ups rather than relationships, while arguing that hook-ups are more than just a fling but for fulfillment of personal needs. Grimes starts off by stating a reason for hook-ups being mostly hormones. Also, he talks about people who are into hook-ups might not have the commitment that relationships need. Next, hook-ups are roughly defined as casual sexual encounters that do not lead to anything in the future. Some pro’s Grimes talks about is having the liveliness of hook-up your letting someone else see what they usually can’t. Also getting closer to them, while getting the pleasure that they like you enough to…

Response: This is a dialogue between Delaney and Kyra when he calls her to tell her that he hit a man by his car. It is still at the beginning chapter of the book, when Delaney is still confident in his democratic values, and yet this quotation indicates that a clear prejudice against Mexicans such as Cándido. It is an early insight into Delaney's character, which shows that he does not really believe the ideals of equality which he claims to hold on. The man he hit by his car was a Mexican - thus, there was no need to worry about being sued, and thus, no need to be concerned with trying to find the man and to get him medical treatment, despite the fact that he is clearly seriously wounded. Finally, Delaney considers that twenty dollars made the problem go away - there is nothing more to worry about.…

In America, every four years there is a presidential election that gives Americans the right to vote. The United States is a role model to other countries of the concept of giving all citizens equal share in the government and the way it is run. The Electoral College ruins the voting and creates an unfair system that is not equal. It destroys the fundamental part of democracy that gives everyone the right to vote. The Electoral College raises the question "Is the United States a republic?". With the Electoral College, it is a winner take all system which makes some votes practically useless. The founding fathers believed that most people were uneducated and would make uninformed decisions and the way news travel has changed. With this system,…

One aspect of the Mortality Unit that I found most intriguing was the hook-up culture for college students. There are many different viewpoints on the topic. Some believe kids just want sex with no strings attached while others are determined these same kids are just looking for love. I am one of the believers that college students are sick of the current hook-up culture and want real true relationships.…

Does sex sell? Is it necessary to include sexual images in an advertisement when trying to sell a product? The answer is contingent upon which audience you are targeting and what product you are trying to sell. By linking these sexual images to a product, the reaction to purchase the product is based upon a false desire; these desires are created by physical instincts. Often times sex appeal is used as a marketing strategy to appeal to certain target audiences. There are different ways of using sex to sell in an advertisement, all of which generally appeal to the senses of the audience. Although some perceptions of these advertisements are negative, the use of sex results in a more interesting, appealing ad, ultimately…

Many spoken conversation conversations contain spontaneity; face to face conversations have to be quick and spontaneous. Speakers need to think of what they are going to say almost immediately. Rapid responses can avoid awkward and unwanted pauses. Sometimes the time given for a response is often too short, so to give the speaker some time to think about what to say next, fillers are used. An example is ‘Erm, I don’t know’. Fillers are commonly used at the beginning of a sentence or in the middle when the speaker is unsure of what to say (next). Without fillers the previous speaker may think they are still required to speak.…

Placeholders have proven to be an ideal category of classic speech patterns. Examples of placeholders include the phrases, um, well, you know, and like. Placeholders are often used to “fill in” gaps in a conversation in order to keep thoughts flowing. When individuals do not know what to say, they use words like “um” and “well” to fill in the awkward halt in between words. Because the short openings in a discussion are filled with placeholders, it prevents others from speaking. Remarkably talkative people often use placeholders because they do not want others to have a chance to talk. Although talkative individuals use placeholders for their selfish needs, innocent individuals who need a few more moments to think about what they want to express also use placeholders.…
