For this assignment I was able to interview Mr. Rick Cole Jr. currently the Vice President for Athletics at Dowling College, he will take over as Athletic Director at Iona College on June 1st. Mr. Cole attended Buffalo State, where he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education. Prior to coming to Dowling College he was an Associate Athletic Director at St. John’s University and prior to that he was Stony Brook University's Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs and Advancement. He has been coaching juniors volleyball for more than 20 years and is currently Club Director and U-18 and U-17 Technical Director at Long Island Volleyball Academy. While at Stony Brook he was in charge of setting up fundraisers to help fund the college’s transition from division III to division I. At St. John’s he managed one of the University’s biggest corporate sponsors, a d was also in charge of marketing and fundraising for all 21 varsity teams. One thing that intrigued me about Mr. Cole was that he has been an employee at all divisions of the NCAA. His knowledge athletics is second to none. At Dowling College he was responsible for planning and developing Brookhaven field, a $12.5 million sports complex that is home to the soccer, lacrosse, baseball and softball teams. Prior to the existence of this complex, Dowling College was playing on public fields so for the school to develop their own field was huge. Mr. Cole believes that with great facilities, student-athletes will have more opportunities to better themselves, and it makes the University even more appealing to prospective athletes.
When asked what his plan was going to Iona College he said that he would be evaluating the athletic program first to determine the needs for the University. While at Dowling College he was able to hire the right coaches that eventually led to the schools first national championship in men’s soccer. Along with this national championship
