Introduction

A lathe is a machine tool which rotates the work piece on its axis to perform various operations such as cutting ,sanding, knurling, drilling or deformation with tools that are applied to the work piece to create an object which has symmetry about an axis of rotation . Lathes are used in woodturning, metalworking, metal spinning, Thermal spraying/ parts reclamation, and glass-working. The material can be held in place by either one or two centers, at least one of which can be moved horizontally to accommodate varying material lengths. Other work-holding methods include clamping the work about the axis of rotation using a chuck or collet, or to a faceplate, using clamps or dogs .
Examples of objects that can be produced on a lathe include candlestick holders, gun barrels, cue sticks, table legs, bowls , baseball bats, musical instruments, crankshafts, and camshafts.

Wooden Lathes Machine are the oldest variety. All other varieties are descended from these simple lathes A wood lathe is a machine used to form a piece of wood into a desired shape, a variety of other useful, fancy and decorative wood items. A piece of wood is attached to a spinning arm and various tools are used to shape the piece of wood as it spins.

An adjustable horizontal metal rail or the tool rest is placed between the material and the operator accommodates the positioning of shaping tools, which are usually hand-held. With wood, it is common practice to press and slide sandpaper against the still-spinning object after shaping to smooth the surface made with the metal shaping tools.

There are also woodworking lathes for making bowls and plates, which have no horizontal metal rail, as the bowl or plate needs only to be held by one side from a metal face plate. Without

Among those inventions that are credited with passing into general practical use are the strut bridge, the automated bobbin winder, the rolling mill, the machine for testing the tensile strength of wire and the lens-grinding machine pictured at right. In the lens-grinding machine, the hand rotation of the grinding wheel operates an angle-gear, which rotates a shaft, turning a geared dish in which sits the glass or crystal to be crushed. A single action rotates both surfaces at a speed ratio determined by the…

    History of Circular Saw

As changes in the economics of the industry occurred, developments in powered machinery began that had an impact on both preparing and assembling. In 1805, Brunel took out a patent for large circular saws particularly associated with veneer cuttingand in 1807 developed the saw further in association with block-making machinery. However, one of the most important developments was not on this scale at all. The small circular saw of up to seven inches diameter, often operated by a treadle, was one of the keys to the success of small-scale furniture makers. This saw enabled makers of cheap furniture to square up, mitre and rabbet cleanly, accurately, and quickly, allowing the frames of cheap carcase work to be simply rebated and nailed. This method of rebating, using a circular saw, was particularly useful for drawer-making which was traditionally a place for using dovetail joints. The advantage of this cheap method was that a dozen drawers could be made in the time it took to merge joint just one.…

Your Honor, Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury, I am here today representing the Nation of South Africa in Prosecuting David Madondo, also known as Tsotsi, for one count of conspiracy to murder, one count of attempted murder, one count of assault & battery, and one count of kidnapping. Some people believe that David is innocent for his actions, and that the reason for his actions are because of the government policy and that to be able to survive he had to commit crimes, but I oppose. The way that the government runs their country is no valid reason to kill. Madondo is guilty of his actions and the crimes he has committed. To begin, David Madondo is being charged with conspiring the murder of Gumboot Dhalmini.…

One of the traditional types of simple machines is an inclined plane. Like the pulley and lever, the inclined plane provides a means of raising a heavy load easily. It is mainly useful for loading barrels since they can be rolled up the incline plane. The inclined plane was one of the machines available in ancient times. For example- the early Egyptians used inclined planes in the construction of the pyramids. Today many inclined planes are used in sports and recreation like water skiing and slides. They are especially used when loading and unloading trucks since many things are too heavy for people to move. Many roofs are built with an incline so rain water would slide down easily.…

GRINDING MACHINES Grinding is the process of removing metal by the application of abrasives which are bonded to form a rotating wheel. When the moving abrasive particles contact the workpiece, they act as tiny cutting tools, each particle cutting a tiny chip from the workpiece. It is a common error to believe that grinding abrasive wheels remove material by a rubbing action; actually, the process is as much a cutting action as drilling, milling, and lathe turning.…
