Some really effective moments when we worked as a team was when we had to organise the fish and chips and when we had to set up for the quiz night, we all stuck together and set up the hall in under an hour. The best team that I have ever been associated with, was a team created at work called “The VA-CLC Nurses”. The team was created by a co-worker to run the 5k run in the honor of our fallen veterans. The results were very favorable considering the fact that we were able to recruit a lot of people to join and we all worked great together. The leader maximized the team’s strength by communicating to all of us on how to put our differences aside, and on how to come together for a greater cause than our own. Members often set goals for not only themselves but as whole. They hold each other accountable for actions and push each other to become better, they depend on one another. Everyone has a role on her team and they work well together. They might face challenges but they know they can work together to overcome them. The Ithaca Women’s indoor track and field team has positive group dynamics. The one area of intervention I would choose be to try and get the team to mix and become more familiar with people of other events. Have outings or different forms of team bonding of the entire team. Maybe even break the team up into groups not based on their event have them complete a task and get to know one…
As a player for the Hanford West basketball team, I was placed into situations that required me to step up and be the leader of the team. One of these situations was during a game when our most talented player had been injured. I know my teammates relied on me to be the one to look up to for all the answers. I was certain I would have to go beyond my capabilities to lead this unit to victory. The game started off horribly because of the evident lack of effort from our team. As the commander of this group of young men I knew something had to change. I stepped out of my comfort zone and became very vocal in order to get some motivation pumping through our veins. Every time my teammates made a play I would be sure to acknowledge them in some way, whether it was a high five or a nod. Effective team are important, and their functions crucial to their success. I have found that clear goals, relaxed environment, open communication, and freedom to express ideas and feelings are great ways to ensure success. In the video “Helping Annie”, the dynamics of the team were lost due to lack of information, who was right and who could be trustworthy. When team members meet, they should feel as though they blend in with the group. They should feel a commitment to the goals and achievements to the group. What I know about groups are, that having valued diversity, defined roles, balanced participation, and cooperative relationships help with moving the group to a positive outcome. Leadership is a prized commodity, however, it is not one that has always come naturally to me. I was a rather quiet kid growing up, and so I rarely let my voice be heard while I was at school. Despite my timid nature, I was able to develop enough self-confidence to open up to others and share my feelings through baseball. Baseball is truly a team sport, requiring constant communication and trust between teammates. As such, the close companionship I held with my team mates created the ideal environment for me to develop my leadership skills. An effective leader doesn’t have all the answers but manages to make good decisions most of the time based on input from others. Listening to the team, understanding their thought processes and taking time to explore possibilities is important. Show your team that you are open to their ideas, empower them to take lead roles and ownership of projects, let them understand that it’s ok to make a mistake and help them learn from it. In freshmen in high school, my coach told me that I was taking charge of the team, since the captain was absent. At first, I was excited that I was able to demonstrate my leadership qualities, but then pressure was piled onto me as I try to figure out how I should behave. Unfortunately, I did not realize that until I saw my bad habits and poor choices mimicked by the players. I was under the belief that was exempt from the rules. Instead of being an example, I showed up late, wore what I wanted, and ate goldfish and chewed on sunflower seeds on the field. The young kids looked up to me, and wanted to be like me. Failing to set a positive example for the kids, I needed to humble myself and lead, instead of feeling that I was above it all. None of the older coaches called out my failure to lead by example, so I was left to find my error on my own. After seeing it in the 11 year olds, it was quite necessary to step out of my comfort zone and conform to their rules. That moment became one of the defining moments of my young life.
