Often times you see athletes performing dominating blocks, making big hits, or making acrobatic catches. However, athletes have much more to offer off their respective playing surfaces that goes unseen. Here at Henderson State University athletes are supposed to epitomize what a college student in Arkadelphia should be. We’re depended upon to be campus leaders to our peers and set examples verbally as well as through our actions. Sometimes we’re seen as intimidating individuals do to our outer appearance but we’re empathetic to others just as others. Our athletic program is set on allowing our athletes to give back to our community and school through participation in various events that occur throughout the calendar year. By providing opportunities for student-athletes to serve, these young men and women make meaningful contributions to society. Teams as well as individual student-athletes are involved in numerous charity and community organizations, schools and hospitals. Some student-athletes have also created, initiated and implemented service projects/activities. One specific event, Reddie to Serve, allows us just this amble opportunity to show our gratitude and appreciation back to the citizens of…

    Title IX Pros And Cons

A study commissioned by the National Players College Association (NPCA) and Drexel University Sport Management Program in 2011 debunked this belief by revealing that the scholarship offered to student athletes by National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as articulated by Title IX only covers the tuition and accommodation fees (Staurowsky, 2012). As a result of this, recipients of such scholarships end up footing other academic costs that can’t be classified as accommodation or tuition charges. Therefore, considering that NCAA scholarships can’t even offer absolutely free education to student athletes, it goes without saying that Title IX is totally unfair to thousands of students who generate millions of dollars for their universities while participating in different athletic competitions and activities (Miller,…

This journal provides an insight to the problems of paying student athletes as well as some issues that are apparent with paying student athletes. It also provides insight to exactly how colleges as well as the NCAA can allocate funds to provide stipends for student athletes. The only stock issue that I see within this journal is what I previously stated which is the confirmation bias but overall I will keep that in mind when presenting the information.…

The existence of college athletics is often justified on the grounds that its success attracts students and is far more than just extracurricular activities. I tend to agree with that. However, a common counterpoint is its cost. Those who believe this statement students argue they shouldn't support athletics since its rising expenses and the pursuit of more revenue to support college sports have become a destabilizing force. Such as the words of Sally Jenkins, "Athletic departments take in more money than ever — and spend it just as fast". That is an understandable concern. Most of the time, college spending on athletics seems is growing far more quickly than spending on academics, and seems mostly dependent students fee. Even though college…

As an Accounting major, I am very interested and have become fond of learning about the varying business aspects within the sports industry. As a result, I decided to conduct my interview with a professional that is associated with the business operations of athletics. The person that I interviewed was Dawn Reynolds, the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Business and Finance here at the University of Miami. After initially getting in contact with Ms. Reynolds a few weeks ago, I was finally able to meet with her briefly and conduct my interview on November 30, 2010, in room 261 in the Hecht Athletics Center. Just to give a bit of background information about Ms. Reynolds, she is from Elmira, New York and now currently resides in Coral Gables, Florida. She graduated from the University of Miami with a major in Finance and started her career at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia where she worked for four years as their budget coordinator. As a past president of the College Athletics Business Managers Association, she was named the College Athletic Business Manager of the Year in 2003 and has since served on various committees including the ACC Finance Committee and chairs the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. She has worked with the University of Miami for the past 20 years and is currently the Chief Fiscal Officer for the Department and is a member of the executive management team. Below is a list of ten questions and answers from the interview I conducted:…
