expression of prejudice or aversion in biased practices. The ideology stating racist practices often comprises the idea that humans can be divided into separate groups that are not the same in their social behavior and distinctive sizes and that can be ranked as lesser or superior. Racist ideology can become obvious in many parts of social life. Connected social actions may include xenophobia, otherness, segregation, hierarchical ranking, supremacism, and related social phenomena.
In my opinion, Being too black for white people and too white for black people is a very big stereotype used in the United States. A lot of black and white people are looked up and down on a daily basis because of the color of their skin. When are people going to realize that every one is the same? No race is different from the other. A lot of problems occur when race is brought into situations. One big problem I have noticed is that people are too often judged by race which makes them lose their chances at achieving greater opportunities in their personal life. For example, there was a certain company in Milwaukee that was hiring for a certain positon. If I am not mistaken, it was a managerial position. Of course to be a manager, you have to have set qualifications in some cases. What I mean by qualifications are previous manager experience, customer service experience and sometime even a college degree. In this case, there was a young African-American female who came in for an interview and was turned away before she even got to say herself she was interested in working. The owner said she did not want to have blacks working in her store because she felt like they “stole” too much. It amazes me how I analyzed that whole statement just to come to realize that not only is she ignorant, but white people steal too. That stereotype can cause a lot of misunderstandings because if the young lady wasn black, she wuld be gotten interviewed. Of course, she was sued and her business never prospered.
White people sometimes can classify blacks as being ghetto or uneducated. They can be too black by the type of clothes they wear, what type of hairstyle they have in their head or maybe even how they speak. It has been several cases where whites and blacks have gotten into heated disagreements about equality.
Criticism can fall under this category also.
In our world today, we use the term “acting white” in some cases. Acting white is a judgmental term, useful to African Americans, which states to a person's alleged betrayal of their culture by assuming the social outlooks of white society. Success in schools in particular be seen as a form of selling out by being untrue to one's beliefs. The question of whether or not acting too white is prevalent, and has been discussed in educational literature. The African-American comedian Bill Cosby, used the words in what was a speech he wrote in May 2004 when he tested the African American community against the idea that receiving education was acting white. Black people accused of "acting white" are occasionally mentioned as Black Anglo-Saxons. The 2008 election of Barack Obama as President of the United States resulted in an open discussion that the acting white attitude may be decreasing, as he was a model of African-American
accomplishment.
African-Americans use the term actin white in a sense of saying being too proper or high-maintenance. For example, I’ve once over heard a two black females at a restaurant saying “Oh, I couldn’t hang around her. She use to act too white for me.” The term is debatable, and its exact meaning is very difficult to describe. Many students feel lackadaisical from succeeding in school by the negative preconceptions of ethnic peers; such a view has been expressed in articles in like The New York Times, Time Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal and by public figures and academics across the government.
The biggest problem with the idea of “acting white” – that unaspiring black people in all-black societies police their fellow citizens for their prolific behaviors to the larger community’s loss. The students in the movie, Dear White People live and learn in an united setting without racial equality. In the movie’s elite context, however, “acting white” isn’t a indication or a value of a devastating victimhood that results in students whom are trying too succeed in like having to suffer their harsh social consequences. Rather, “acting white” means entering the elevator of white honor without increasing a analysis of white sovereignty on the way up.
In conclusion, While all the old business about the possibility for lower and middle class black and white Americans to pull themselves up by their boot straps may be dead in intellectually honest circles, the “acting white” and “acting black” theory is alive and well – or not so well – among society in the United States. The theory provides a simple name for the difficulty that people have to overcome just to make it in life. But in the struggle to overcome their racist attitudes, many people confused the structural weaknesses of their socioeconomic and racial statuses with things of adapted racism. And a film like Dear White People – which I liked – only highlights the split of the idealistic black and white identity between socioeconomically underprivileged Americans who are punished for “acting white” and “acting black”. Believe it or not, those who are economically well-off are most likely the one who are trying to figure out how to be “black or white” enough.
