In the first part of the book, “The New Kids”, there are many similarities to my high school as well as many differences in the school and the student population. While I was reading this part of the book, I was immediately brought back to my high school memories. Students in the book felt and had similar experiences I experienced in high school. I connected with experiences that were talked about in the first part of the book. High school is a very trying time in most teen’s lives. There are constant struggles to fit in and manage the ever-changing demands of early adulthood. I connected to the chapter, “From Journey to Journal”. Everyone was getting ready to look their best and take their pictures for the yearbook. This brought me back to high school, were every year everyone would take pictures in the beginning of the school year and wait till the end of the year to see everyone’s photos come out in the yearbook. In the chapter, “From Journey to Journal” it discussed many different experiences that these young adults had gone through. Students from the high school were so resilient; it’s amazing that they were able to function so well in school. I can’t even imagine being in the shoes of Jessica. She separated from her mother to make a new life for herself in American with her dad. Yet when she got to American she had a brutal awakening of her father already settling down with a new family, and her stepmother wanting nothing to do with her. Her struggles with living alone and not having the typical support of a family really pulled at my heartstrings. Knowing all that she’s been through yet she is still able to perform well in school shows just how resilient she it. This chapter was extremely eye-opening because of all the experiences these students have been
