Reflective Essay On Volunteering At Primrose
Last year, I went to Pinetree Preschool, where there is nothing but young children. That was an experience I enjoyed and found so valuable and opened my eyes to the potential and possibilities of children. This year, I chose the complete opposite of Pinetree and I volunteered at Primrose, a retirement home for people who suffer from alzheimer's or dementia. At Primrose, I saw a completely different side of human life. That may seem like an exaggeration but I tend not to spend much time with people much, much older than me, as they were at Primrose. I learned an incredible amount of patience and understanding and just life in general during my time volunteering at Primrose, that I could not had received anywhere else. Going into Primrose, I was more nervous than anything else I have ever had to do, because I had no idea what to expect and what they would expect from …show more content…
Every single time I walked into Primrose, the residents would instantly begin a conversation with us and be genuinely interested in everything we had to say, but we were more interested in hearing them speak. Every person I spoke to and met during volunteering at Primrose had a wisdom that I didn't even know existed. It's crazy to think that the residents at Primrose have done everything life has to offer. They have finished high school, gone off to college, fallen in love, gotten married, had children, lost loved ones, been teachers, lawyers, artists, and everything in between. As someone who is just beginning her journey in the world, meeting these people and hearing their journeys has inspired me in a way that I will always treasure in my heart and will continue to inspire me far beyond high school. I couldn't be anymore gratful to had been able to meet them and to hear them, and for them to allow me the pleasure of getting to know

Some of the things that I am involved with outside of school would be the Make-A-Wish foundation, Tutoring, and activities with my church. I have learned a lot about my self through volunteering with these activities and have grown as a person. I would encourage everyone to try and pick one volunteer group that they feel passionate about and spend time-sharing your talents with it. I know it is something that you will not regret doing.…

The results of my hard work and the positive impact it creates on the people around me is a reward in itself. One of the most memorable instances in which I contributed to the greater good was during the summer of my freshman year where I volunteered at West Pines Community Church. That summer, myself and about 50 other volunteers set out to make an impactful difference in the…

The first was spent working with the children from the Safe Haven Program. We spent time with the children of this program for the beginning weeks of the summer semester. We sold tomato plants at the Farmer’s Market along with the children from this program, which had grown these plants on the Tuskegee University farm. While working with the children from the local YMCA, we had the children participate in arts and crafts projects, as well as games and other activities. I had the opportunity to spend one Wednesday at the Auburn University’s farm, which was the agency of three of my peers. While visiting their agency we had the chance to harvest vegetables and volunteer at the food…

In tenth grade, I went on a missions trip with my church to Mink Lake, which is a camp by the Gunflint Trail in northern Minnesota. During the missions trip, we prepared a camp for the summer. Some of my personal jobs were to help clean out two sheds and reorganize them, haul logs, and trim trees all over the camp. The trip benefitted myself and the other people on the missions trip because we were able to help people have a fun experience at camp over the summer, and we also helped the people running the camp to not have to work so hard to prepare the camp for the summer campers. Another reason it was a good experience for all of us workers is because we did not have our cell phones, so we were able to form new relationships with each other since we were not constantly distracted by our…

The third program I helped with was a soccer tournament that my fellow Bhutanese immigrants organized between teams from other states. As I volunteered there, I helped prepare food for the players, I picked up the trash, and I gave water to the players after the game. The purpose of the soccer tournament was to have fun and enjoy playing sports. I would like to join a soccer team when I go to high school. In the future, I would like to volunteer in a program that helps people who are facing cancer.…

From this activity I have learn that just attending university and receiving grades is not all that is required to attaining a future with a pleasant job. Volunteering and work experience are also necessary, therefore, I would consider joining a volunteer or work opportunity while attending university. The next step I am going to take toward my preferred future is to obtain a job, I will do this by applying to jobs that require communicating with people, working with children or opportunity for networking. Another step that I can take is to volunteer at my old high school, I have already worked at an elementary school, and therefore it would be nice to see if I would have a similar or dissimilar experience at the high…

When I was in the eighth grade I went on a weeklong mission trip with my youth group to Houston, Texas. This trip was a turning point in my life spiritually and mentally, completely changing my thought process of inner city missions at the time. There is a ministry there called CSM that invites youth groups to come and they will take the group to certain places in the city where they can serve and get a feel for the need there and many places. This trip was very impacting for me and I am still looking back on it and realizing the benefits.…

I am spending my time volunteering at St. Marks United Methodist Church (St. Marks UMC). This church is an open community, working to create a comfortable atmosphere for anyone and everyone in and around the area. I work specifically with the youth of the church and I reach out to students who are my age or younger than me. I have been volunteering at St. Marks for almost four years, assisting in many different groups and organizations sponsored by our church. I volunteer at this church because it has given me an opportunity to be myself, explore talents, and make strong connections, and I want to help continue this effort and reach out to kids who are struggling with a lot of the same difficulties I faced. I believe that volunteering here is a great experience for someone studying psychology because you meet and get to know many kids who are facing various issues in their lives.…

Having the opportunity to make new, diverse friends around the community impacted me as a person. The people I met not only included the people I served, but also included the people I worked alongside of me in the food pantry. Since I volunteered at the same day and time every week, I was able to become familiar with many new people. In fact, many of these people were even able to connect to my life. One day I had a conversation with a man I volunteered with numerous times whose name was Steve.…

I would like to tell you that my day in the program was unique because it let me explore the program in depth. I am working at the Cleveland clinic as an English-Arabic healthcare interpreter and I feel the warm atmosphere between all the people in the hospital every day. Being in the hospital to facilitate the communication between the patients with limited English proficiency and the physicians made my dream of being a resident at the Cleveland Clinic grow within me. Those bilingual encounters made me familiar with the hospital departments where I had to work as a team with different staff, nurses and lab technicians to make sure that we provide the highest quality of care to the patients. Furthermore, I had a new friend waiting for me in…

I have always found the human body fascinating with the way it works. It’s like a complex machine, with little parts that work together or by themselves to perform specific functions. I have a weakness for hospitalised patient’s especially young children. My love of science as well as my strong passion to help children tackle through illnesses is the reason why I am choosing to study child nursing. In places like the hospital there can be very demanding and challenging jobs which I love because I feel as if I get to see another side to me.…

Theresa’s Church. Last spring break I attended a service trip in the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee. The area that we went to was the second poorest county in the state. During my time there, we helped fix up houses of the people who live up in the mountains. These people lived in cheaply made, small houses that I couldn’t imagine living in, especially raising a family in. Throughout the week we put in new carpeting, painted walls, and built porches for the three families. My experience helped me be more grateful for what I had and opened my mind to how people in our own country live. Although my spring break experience this year will be much different than that, I believe that it was very important that I attended that trip first because it provided me with a foundation of what I want to do every year during spring break. Also that trip helped me mature and grow as a person which will make the transition to a location out of the United States much…
