Relationship Analysis: The Interpersonal Relationship between Walt and Jesse on Breaking Bad
The TV series Breaking Bad had a wonderful example of a dysfunctional relationship between to characters named Walt and Jesse. Walt was a chemist and Jesse was a meth addict and the two joined forces to make and sell meth. The relationship became very co-dependent and self destructive. In was toxic and led to destruction of both their lives.
Walt was a chemistry teacher who recently found out he had lung cancer. He knew he did not have enough money for his family to thrive if he passed away. Jesse was a former student of Walt's and a known drug addict and dealer. Walter came up with a theory that Jesse could help him make meth and sell it for him so that he could make enough money for his wife and two children to survive in the event of his death. In the short term the attraction to each other was to make quick money and depart each knowing their simple roles in the relationship and the that it would be over quickly. However the long term attraction was greed and revenge. Walt and Jesse became overwhelmed with the need for more money and it led to a co dependence on each other. It became more obvious the destruction of their relationship as Jesse wanted out. Walt then had to manipulate Jesse into staying. One of the ways he did this was he watched Jesses girlfriend die of a drug overdose instead of helping her. The reason he did this was because Jesse said he wanted out he was leaving ton with this girl. Walt let her die so he could keep Jesse in his life and in his business of meth dealing.
The stages of this relationship went from friendly and a commitment of quick money to death. It was never the intention of either when this relationship began. The two of them became twisted into each others life and the beginning roles of becoming drug dealers and the life that comes with it. The wanted quic money but saw and did things that changed
